Safety and Occupational Health Specialist

This position serves as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist GS-0018-11 with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO), Water, Lab & Analysis Services Division. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 09/01/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. Minimum Qualification Requirements A. Specialized Experience To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is that which has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis: Utilizing Knowledge of regulatory and engineering standards governing the occupational health issues and programs pertinent to laboratory operations including the ability to establish/maintain credibility with others on technical matters. Experience independently interpreting, evaluating and applying safety guidelines to hazardous situations that includes modification and adaptation of the work environment as required. Utilizing Knowledge of safety and occupational health programs and issues, with specific emphasis in fire prevention, electrical safety, hazardous materials/hazardous waste management. Applying knowledge of safety management systems and/or the ability to plan, develop, implement, coordinate, maintain and continually improve a complete and comprehensive safety management program. Experience planning and implementing safety and occupational health education and training activities to various audiences. If qualifying solely on Experience, then you MUST MEET two (2) of the above specialized experience statements to be found qualified. B. Education Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Education MUST be related to the nature of the advertised position. Combination of Specialized Experience and Education A combination of education and specialized experience that totals 100% of the requirement for the GS-11 grade level.
