Who We Are

AI&DHI serves as the operational backbone for AI and digital health research at U-M, spanning faculty, researchers, and clinicians across 75 departments and 17 schools and colleges. Our team provides the data infrastructure, AI tools, systems integrations, and research enablement services that help investigators translate promising ideas into validated, deployable innovations. We partner closely with Michigan Medicine, Michigan Engineering, and other institutional units to deliver services researchers can rely on.

Job Summary

We're hiring a full-time Data and AI Engineer to design, build, and maintain the data systems, pipelines, and AI integrations that power research and clinical tools across Michigan Medicine. This role centers on data architecture, EHR data integration, database engineering, and technical consultation, with additional contributions to backend development, APIs, automation, and AI systems integration.

You'll sit at the intersection of data engineering and applied AI ? building robust, production-grade data pipelines, managing OpenShift/Kubernetes-based infrastructure, and integrating AI tools with platforms including Epic EHR, frontier and enterprise LLMs, and other services across the university. We're looking for a self-motivated engineer with strong experience in data systems development, container orchestration, and AI tool deployment who thrives in a collaborative, research-driven environment and enjoys solving complex technical problems that directly impact clinical and research outcomes.

This position is hybrid, based primarily from home with onsite opportunities in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A fully remote arrangement will be considered for exceptional candidates.

Responsibilities *

• Serve as a primary technical resource for understanding and interpreting Michigan Medicine EHR data across a broad range of clinical, operational, and research domains.

• Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of how Epic MiChart data is created, represented, integrated, and made available through systems such as Clarity, Caboodle, Chronicles, FHIR services, HL7 interfaces, and institutional data warehouses.

• Investigate unfamiliar clinical, nursing, hospital, and administrative workflows to determine how the underlying data should be interpreted and used.

• Design, build, and support real-time and batch healthcare-data integrations, including HL7 ADT, radiology, cardiology, laboratory, and other clinical interface feeds.

• Work with institutional integration technologies and teams, including interface engines and messaging infrastructure, to ingest, transform, validate, and deliver clinical data.

• Serve as a data consultant to researchers, clinicians, analysts, and software engineers by helping them identify appropriate data sources, understand data limitations, and design effective data-driven solutions.

• Independently research complex data questions while recognizing when clinical, operational, Epic, or infrastructure subject-matter experts should be engaged to validate assumptions and conclusions.

• Review proposed data and system designs, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and recommend solutions that improve accuracy, maintainability, scalability, and alignment with institutional standards.

• Design and review database schemas, tables, views, stored procedures, and data-access patterns that support application-development and research initiatives.

• Partner with software engineers early in the application-development process to ensure database structures and data-access approaches are well designed rather than added after application development is underway.

• Support backend and API development associated with data platforms, real-time data services, research applications, and AI-enabled tools.

Required Qualifications *

Systems Programmer/Analyst Sr

• Bachelor?s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience.

• Demonstrated knowledge of EHR data and the relationships among clinical workflows, system configuration, operational documentation, and downstream reporting or research data.

• Experience consuming or supporting HL7 clinical interface feeds.

• 3-5 years of experience designing database structures for research applications, clinical applications, analytics systems, or AI-enabled tools.

• Proficiency in Python or equivalent languages for data engineering and systems development.

• Familiarity with large language model (LLM) APIs and AI tool deployment.

• Experience working with sensitive and confidential data regulated by HIPAA.

• Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.

Systems Programmer/Analyst Intermediate

• Bachelor?s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience.

• 2-3 years of experience investigating data questions, validating findings, and working with subject-matter experts to resolve uncertainty..

• General knowledge of EHR data and experience working with multiple clinical or operational data domains.

• Experience investigating data questions, validating findings, and working with subject-matter experts to resolve uncertainty.

• Experience with relational database design, SQL development, data integration, and data-quality validation.

• Familiarity with Epic, HL7, FHIR, healthcare APIs, interface feeds, or comparable healthcare-data technologies.

• Familiarity with large language model (LLM) APIs and AI tool deployment.
