Job Posting: Hydroelectric Plant Technician III Department of Water Resources Classification: JC-522040 Salary: $9,909.00 – $13,056.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable. Final Filing Date: 7/8/2026 Overview Under the general direction of the Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) Technician Supervisor, the incumbent safely performs complex technical work and serves as the technical lead for HEP Technician I and II. The role plans, coordinates, schedules, prioritizes, distributes, and oversees the work of HEP Technician I's and II's, providing guidance and direction to lower level staff. The incumbent ensures safety procedure compliance for all work performed on control, communication, electrical and mechanical equipment in connection with the operation and maintenance of the State Water Project's generating/pumping plants, switchyards, water conveyance, and facilities. Special Requirements This position requires the incumbent to have the following: The strength and ability to move and transport heavy equipment or material up to 50 lbs. Stamina to bend, stoop, kneel, and stretch to access, test, or install cables, equipment or materials. Stamina to climb 25‑foot ladders, long flights of stairs, scaffolding, and towers to access, test, or install cables, equipment or materials. Ability to identify color‑coded parts, indicator lights, CRT display data, hazard warning tags, and warning barrier tapes. Ability to work in confined spaces. Manual dexterity to use hand tools, operate control panels, equipment keypads and delicate component or printed circuit board repair. Ability to work around loud machinery. Must have a valid Class C California driver's license. Note: This position is not eligible for telework and requires an acceptable background check under the North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection Standard CIP‑004. Minimum Requirements Minimum qualifications are listed in the Class Specification. The incumbent must meet at least the minimum qualifications stated in the Classification Specification(s). Desirable Qualifications Experience installing and testing electrical and mechanical equipment. Experience planning, coordinating, and distributing technical functions. Experience reviewing and analyzing test results to determine corrective actions. Experience assessing equipment malfunctions. Experience preparing equipment test, trip test, load test, and calibration reports. Experience reviewing preventive maintenance records and implementing changes. Experience providing informal training on procedures for testing, troubleshooting and repairing equipment. Experience conducting field inspections. Experience with safety meetings, safety audits, pre‑work safety plans & Job Hazard Analysis (JHA). Experience assisting Planner/Scheduler functions. Experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment including host servers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sequence event loggers, etc. Experience with communication equipment including high‑speed data multiplexors, Ethernet, fiber optic, LAN & WAN, etc. Knowledge of information technology (IT) equipment including computers, servers, video surveillance systems, etc. Experience with conveyance instrumentation including relays, programmable logic controllers, sensors & transducers, etc. Knowledge of generating & pumping plant equipment including high‑voltage transformers, power circuit breakers, governors, etc. Application Instructions Applicants must submit a complete State application (STD 678) and resume online via CalCareers or by mail/drop‑off at the address below.
