About The Role We are seeking a highly motivated Microbiologist I to support ongoing projects within public health and the federal government. The successful candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology, clinical, and laboratory techniques, and be able to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience in data analysis, interpretation, and laboratory projects such as vaccine development, infectious disease studies, molecular epidemiology, and surveillance is expected. The position is fully onsite at a customer location in Atlanta, Georgia. Responsibilities Maintain inventories of laboratory equipment and supplies. Follow standard operating procedures and ensure accurate and efficient work. Perform aseptic technique, processing, detection, and enumeration of pathogens and associated genes. Conduct conventional and molecular microbiologic techniques for isolation, identification, and subtyping of pathogens. Prepare samples for sequencing and metagenomic analysis, including extraction and library preparation. Perform conventional and real‑time PCR and data analysis. Meet with SME/project leads bi‑weekly to discuss testing results and plans. Assist with preparing written documents, reports, and analyses of scientific projects and programs. Manage incoming specimen processing, inventory, and chain‑of‑custody requirements as directed by Lab Coordinators. Prepare written protocols and documents according to QMS guidelines. Analyze data from scientific projects using appropriate programs (e.g., Excel, BLAST). Provide weekly project updates to SME/project leads. May assist with processing clinical samples. Requirements Required Skills and Experience Minimum 2–3 years of laboratory experience with molecular biological procedures and methods. Experience in preparation and handling of nucleic acid samples, real‑time PCR, ELISA, etc. Extensive knowledge of laboratory principles and standard methods. Experience analyzing data from scientific projects using appropriate programs (e.g., Excel, BLAST). Experience assisting with specimen accessioning, scanning, and uploading documents into ELIMS. Experience writing project reports, research protocols, and manuscripts. Experience performing laboratory work at a biosafety level 2 (BSL‑2) or BSL‑2‑enhanced environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel. Experience working in a public health setting, ideally supporting the federal government. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced setting. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Effective organization skills. Ability to obtain a government clearance. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship. Education and Training Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, microbiology, life sciences, or a closely related field. Physical Requirements Ability to obtain necessary immunizations, including hepatitis B. Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing, if required. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift 25 pounds regularly. Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents. Must be physically capable of performing repetitive motions such as pipetting and operating cell counters.
