Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Special Care Nursery/Couplet Care Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience required License: Valid nursing license required Certifications: BLS and NRP certifications required Must-Have: COVID vaccine or declination form with documentation and hospital approval Description: COVID vaccine is required or a declination form with appropriate documentation and approval is necessary. A pass/fail simulation lab is required on the first day of orientation, with study guides provided in advance. The unit has 22-30 postpartum beds. Ratios typically consist of 3:1 couplets and 4:1 with designated support staff. There is a charge nurse on the unit who manages the shift and does not typically have patient assignments. Typically, patient care technicians are not staffed, but may be utilized during higher patient-to-nurse ratios. For full-time staff, three weekend shifts are required, including Friday and Saturday nights and one Sunday shift in a four-week schedule. Travelers are required to work two of three major holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Day. Nurses are required to wear designated scrubs, while travelers can wear dark blue scrubs. Nurses perform their own IV starts and there is no dedicated IV team. A respiratory therapist is available 24/7. Pharmacy services are available 24/7. Common patient diagnoses include vaginal deliveries, cesarean section deliveries, and patients on magnesium sulfate, antibiotics, or hypertensive medications. The institution may cancel up to four shifts during a 13-week assignment. Charting is done through a standardized electronic medical record system. Nurses may float to other campuses if competent in additional areas. Floor-specific orientation consists of three shifts. This position does not require a BSN.
