Adaptive Recreation Coordinator

Definition: Under the general supervision from the Program Manager, develops and plans programs for individuals with disabilities, guides program staff, and facilitates the implementation of adaptive program services. Provides supervision and coordinates recreational events for participants determined eligible for adaptive services on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is subject to non-standard work hours and is treated as FLSA Exempt. Distinguishing Features: The Adaptive Recreation Coordinator differs from the Youth Development Specialist by providing and implementing recreational, social, and physical activities & programs for individuals with disabilities. This position is expected to provide technical instruction, guidance and exercise initiative and independent judgment. Essential Functions: Primary functions may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. Tasks: Adaptive Recreation Coordinator: Works to promote socialization, skill development, physical activities, and cultural awareness, healthy utilization of leisure time and recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities who may otherwise be unable to participate in all other youth programs. Assists with creating and developing adaptive programs for individuals with disabilities that enhance social, physical, and emotional skills. Facilitates program implementation, adapts activities, manages behaviors, and provides personal care as needed. Communicates with parents/guardians, staff and management about program and participant’s experience. Serves as main point of contact for parents/guardians, staff, or volunteers for program questions and services. Maintains current knowledge of best practices and trends within the Special Education and Adaptive Recreation fields. Educates and trains staff on special needs groups, strategies for working with individuals with disabilities and provide understanding of what is needed for individuals with disabilities. Establishes and maintains standards of behavior to create safe, orderly, and effective environments for learning. Interacts and communicates with staff, parents and caregivers in a positive and professional manner. Works with staff to plan and implement recreational activities appropriate to the needs/abilities of the participants Works as a team with other staff to ensure a positive and successful experience for participants. Safely create and conduct activities to enhance social and physical skills for youth participants. Enforces effective participant rules and discipline procedures; address and redirect behavior issues, as needed. Addresses and tend to personal care needs of students where toileting, diapering and lifting may be required. Provides awareness and/or training with staff on special needs groups to provide an understanding and accepting environment within the Youth Services Department. Works with Managers and lead staff in identifying programs that are appropriate depending on the special needs/disability. Provides inclusion assistance for youth with disabilities when participating in programming activities. Ensures emergency procedures are established for each participant. Completes other duties as assigned by Director/Assistant Director. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics: Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Knowledge and understanding of state, local and federal regulations and policies affecting the special needs population. Knowledge of a variety of recreational, social and athletic programs for youths and adults. Knowledge and skill in designing and conducting specialized instruction, remediation and evaluation. Knowledge of understanding of child development and effectively meet developmental needs. Knowledge and skills in using effective instructional strategies and practices. Knowledge of community inclusion Knowledge with special education policies, including the IEP process. Skill in managing and promoting positive student behavior Skill in planning, organization, time management, and record keeping. Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. Skill in providing group and team leadership. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with SRPMIC co-workers, youth, their families, multiple agencies, other service providers and the public. Ability to effectively address a wide range of academic and social needs including at-risk, cultural diversity, and individuals with disabilities. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work with a flexible schedule evening, weekend, and sudden changes to schedule. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree with major course work in adaptive physical education, recreation, recreation administration or related field. Minimum of (2) years’ experience in adaptive programing. Certified in Therapeutic Recreation required. Fingerprint Clearance card from State of Arizona or ability to obtain within 30 days Preferred, valid CPR/AED and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days Article 9 certification or ability to obtain within 30 days. Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
