Trauma Nurse Coordinator & Transport Navigator

Job Title

This position is responsible for coordinating trauma care management across the continuum of trauma care, including planning and implementing of clinical protocols, practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice. The transport navigator will receive process and coordinate medical and non-medical discharge transports to ensure throughput of across the hospital.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

• Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtain within 30 days of hire date.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification or obtain within 60 days of hire date.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification or due within 90 days of hire date.
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) through Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) within 6 months of hire date.

Experience:

• Two (2) years trauma or critical care clinical experience (Emergency Department or Critical Care).

Preferred Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN)
• CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) or CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse).

Core Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinates the trauma care management across the continuum of trauma care.
• Works with and reviews cases prepared to ensure compliance with all registry related Trauma Center Designation Criteria.
• Provides for inter-facility staff development, participating in case review, and standardizing practice guidelines.
• Develops and disseminates educational programs for emergency healthcare professionals to gain competence in injury/violence prevention. Provides education opportunities for the general public in ways to reduce injury or violence.
• Monitors clinical outcomes and system issues for Performance Improvement.
• Manages, as appropriate, the operational aspects of Trauma Services.
• Assists the Trauma Registry to facilitate PI activities through the collection, coding, scoring and developing processes.
• Acts as a consultant/liaison by working with all departments to assist in the care of the trauma patient.
• Participates in research selection, analysis and distribution of findings.
• Participates in the development of trauma care systems at the community, state, provincial or national levels.
• Communicates and interacts with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff and the public in general in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for the individuals' need(s).
• Participates in Quality initiatives to help assess and improve the services provided and compliance with regulatory requirements. Reports results to appropriate administrative levels.
• Completes 16 hours of trauma specific continuing education annually.
• Collaborates with department leadership and command center staff using indicators to prioritize discharge and throughput needs.
• Demonstrates clinical expertise by serving as a resource and role model for transport needs and education
• Provides input and assists manager/director in annual review of unit Scope of Service, and performance improvement initiatives in conjunction with other departmental work teams.
• Provide constructive and timely feedback on employee performance and management.
• Serves as a change agent in effecting appropriate changes within the health care delivery system as it relates to evidence-based practice.
• Promotes prehospital providers as valuable assets to the hospital.
• Serves as a liaison by establishing and maintaining open lines of communications with nursing, between other hospital departments, the consumer and the community.
• Participates in meeting the Goals and Objectives of Nursing Service Division and ensures the department contributes to the attainment of the Hospital's Goals and Objectives
• Meets with patients and families when questions arise specific to transportation issues.
• May be required to assess patients for appropriate size and type of transportation.
• Keeps accurate records regarding transportation from the hospital and reports to team.
• Escalates, in a timely manner, any barriers or issues with transportation to the appropriate Command Center Staff for resolution.
• Extensive knowledge of regional geography, traffic patterns, transport routes and time effects.
