Refinish Technician A collision center refinish technicianprepares a vehicle’s surface and applies paint to restore its appearance after damage from an accident.Key duties include sanding, priming, masking, mixing and matching paints, and using spray guns to apply primers, base coats, and clear coats.This role requires strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and knowledge of various paint and surface preparation materials, with potential training through vocational programs or apprenticeships. It would be a bonus if the technician could manage small body repairs in addition to refinish work. Key Responsibilities Surface Preparation Sizing, sanding, masking, and priming vehicle surfaces to ensure proper paint adhesion and a smooth finish. Paint Application Using spray guns and other equipment to apply primers, base coats, and clear coats evenly and without defects. Color Matching Accurately mixing and blending paints to match the vehicle’s original color or a custom request. Quality Control Inspecting the painted surface for imperfections and buffing or polishing as needed for a flawless result. Tool and Equipment Maintenance Keeping painting equipment, tools, and the workspace clean and in good working order. Collaboration Working with other collision repair technicians to ensure timely and high-quality vehicle repairs. Skills and Qualifications Technical Expertise Proficiency in various painting techniques, materials, and the use of spray guns and other related equipment. Detail-Oriented A keen eye for detail is essential for achieving high-quality results and accurate color matching. Safety Awareness A strong understanding of safety protocols, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and handling of hazardous materials. Problem-Solving Resourcefulness to overcome challenges, such as paint imperfections or difficult-to-reach areas.
