Assistant Chief Nursing Officer- Physician Organization

Overview At Houston Methodist, the Assistant Chief of Nursing, Senior Director position reports to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and is responsible for creating an environment in which nurses can excel, fostering excellent patient outcomes and a professional nursing culture. The role has direct operational responsibility for multiple departments, manages staff, budget and policy development, and ensures that patient services comply with nursing standards, state and federal regulations, and evidence‑based practice. In the absence of the CNO, this role assumes full responsibility for all CNO functions. FLSA Status Exempt Responsibilities The position oversees departmental operations, ensures quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency. Key duties include employee engagement, staffing, budgeting, hiring and termination, coaching, compliance, training, and implementation of policies to maintain a safe and effective work environment. People Essential Functions Direct and implement strategic and operational projects, facilitating teams to achieve objectives. Manage staff development, quality, service, and cost effectiveness, providing guidance, feedback, and performance appraisal. Meet or exceed staff engagement and turnover goals. Conduct departmental meetings, rounds, performance appraisals, and coaching to recognize achievements and achieve outcomes. Build strategic relationships across departments to meet business goals and promote teamwork. Collaborate with patient care and support departments, fostering open communication and mutual problem-solving. Serve as a mentor and coach for nursing leadership, including hiring, professional development, and disciplinary actions. Provide visibility through visits and rounds, acting as a liaison for the CNO when required. Service Essential Functions Oversee department operations, projects, schedules, and activities to meet goals within time constraints. Drive service standards to impact patient satisfaction scores. Prioritize plans through the CNO, aligning organizational objectives with systems and human resources. Provide regular updates to the CNO on operational status. Act as liaison for the CNO when immediate contact is unavailable. Collaborate with the CNO to create a professional practice environment, ensuring Magnet status criteria are met. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Ensure a safe workplace by reviewing and revising safety plans and compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements. Optimize safety outcomes and information systems by improving workflow and applying lean principles. Maintain staff credential compliance and enforce policy adherence. Identify and resolve system problems contributing to errors. Lead performance improvement activities to measure and enhance quality of care. Improve patient satisfaction by ensuring timely follow‑up on complaints and incidents. Finance Essential Functions Develop and manage departmental budgets and capital projects for cost-effectiveness. Optimize productivity and resource efficiency to meet financial targets. Manage nursing expenditures and staffing resources to eliminate non‑value costs. Partner with CNO and Human Resources to implement recruitment and retention strategies. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identify and implement innovative practice or workflow solutions through unit and system projects. Lead change initiatives and adapt to new work structures, processes, and cultures. Engage in ongoing career development discussions and staff development conversations. Skills and Abilities Demonstrate competency and proficiency in nursing practice and leadership through ongoing assessment. Communicate effectively in English, with strong oral and written skills. Build confidence and acceptance of ideas through appropriate interpersonal styles. Provide strategic analysis and decision‑making using data from multiple sources. Stay current on regulatory and accreditation agency requirements. Communicate clearly in presentations and written documents. Adapt to fast‑paced environments and changing priorities. Lead teams, build consensus, and inspire confidence from senior leadership. Work under pressure with a solution‑oriented approach. Proficient in spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software. Maintain a positive and supportive attitude. Handle confidential information professionally. Use information technology applications effectively. Possess extensive knowledge of nursing service administration, education, and change leadership. Recognize and lead sustainable change through emotional intelligence. Collaborate with interprofessional teams and promote organizational mission. Deliver transformational and complex matrixed leadership, inspiring and solving across organizations. Membership in the American Organization of Nurse Executives is preferred. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, one of which must be in Nursing. Experience Five years of progressively responsible leadership roles in acute care, public, or academic healthcare systems. Demonstrated leadership ability, preferably in a nursing management position. Lean/Six Sigma training preferred. Licenses and Certifications RN – Registered Nurse, Texas State Licensure, Texas Board of Nursing; PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency. BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association. Magnet-ANCC Recognized Leadership Certification. Supplemental Requirements Work Attire Uniform: No Scrubs: No Business professional: Yes Other (department approved): No On‑Call Employees may be required to be on call during emergencies (e.g., disaster, severe weather events).
