Director of Selection, Undergraduate Admissions

Overview

Undergraduate Admissions is responsible for the recruitment, selection, and enrollment of the first-year and transfer class each year for the School of Arts & Sciences, School of Engineering, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. Admissions is charged with meeting various enrollment goals across schools and programs.

What You'll Do

Reporting to the Dean of Admissions & Enrollment Management, the Director of Admissions Selection serves as a member of the undergraduate admissions leadership team, developing and implementing office-wide strategy, policy, and practice with colleagues. The Director of Admissions Selection is responsible for leading annual selection processes to ensure the office meets the enrollment objectives set by School and University leadership. This role will directly supervise 1-5 administrative or professional staff members.

In addition to successfully executing the assigned responsibilities, the Director of Admissions Selection's effectiveness will rely on their ability to contribute to and enhance a workplace culture that values mentorship, professional development, and comprehensive training. This role requires strategic thinking in a fast-paced environment and a strong understanding of holistic admissions in a highly selective context. The position will ensure that application review is completed in accordance with office and training protocol. In addition, will partner with the Dean of Admissions and Director of Undergraduate Admissions to ensure enrollment objectives are met.

The Director of Admissions Selection must be an approachable leader with excellent communication skills, who is comfortable soliciting and providing feedback. A commitment to customer service, an eagerness to engage in-person with diverse audiences, an ability to delegate, and a genuine interest in mentoring colleagues at all levels of the organization are all essential qualities of a successful Director candidate.

• Serve as a member of the undergraduate admissions senior leadership team, developing and implementing office-wide policy and practice in conjunction with the Dean of Admissions & Enrollment Management, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, and leadership team colleagues.
• Play a leading role in managing the admissions staff, including (co)leadership of staff meetings, staff retreats, admissions committees, and professional development opportunities.
• Evaluate undergraduate admission applications in accordance with training protocol, individually or as part of a team, and chair selection committees or manage cycle processes as assigned.
• Oversee the planning and facilitation of reader training and application evaluation for all application cycles (Questbridge, Early Decision I, Early Decision II, Regular Decision, and Transfer Decisions as directed by Dean of Admissions) for a high-volume admissions office to ensure calibration among readers.
• Manage all application cycle operations, including cycle calendars, daily reader goals and scheduling, and annual process improvements.
• Oversee application credential verification and completion processes in conjunction with administrative staff.
• Partner with office leadership to oversee the review of final academic records of all enrolling students and facilitate hand-off of class to school officials.
• Partner with office leadership and institutional stakeholders to analyze application review processes to ensure effectiveness and regulatory compliance of selection processes.
• Communicate with external partners, such as College Board, Common Application, Scoir, and Coalition for College, to support portfolio and office-wide initiatives.
• Collaborate with internal partners, including the Admissions and Student Services Technology Team, regarding data, systems, including Slate CRM,, and process-related work.
• Supervise 1-5 professional and/or administrative staff.
• Conduct virtual and in-person information sessions and workshops for a variety of audiences, on-campus and off-campus.
• Communicate with students, families, school/organization counselors, and the general public via in-person conversations, email, and phone.
  As requested, lead and/or contribute to a variety of professional development training sessions for undergraduate admissions staff.
• Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Admissions & Enrollment Management and Director of Undergraduate Admissions.

While our office functions in a hybrid modality, the Admissions Counselor can expect to have an on-campus presence.
Travel Requirements - This position involves travel throughout the year, which may include overnight stays. A valid U.S. driver’s license is required, along with the willingness and ability to drive to various
locations using a rental vehicle. Candidates must have a driving record that meets the standards of rental car agencies.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher degree
• 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in university admissions, including individual and/or committee-based application evaluation
• Demonstrated ability to create, implement, and lead office-wide initiatives and revise over time based on feedback, office needs, and experience
• Proven ability to establish and maintain relationships with school counselors, community-based organizations, campus partners, and external partners
• Strong understanding of CRM management software and Microsoft Office Suite
• Outstanding communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
• Cultural sensitivity and previous experience working with diverse student populations
• Comfort traveling both individually and as part of a group
• Valid US Drivers’ License

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience evaluating domestic and international applications at a highly-selective institution
• Prior experience developing and/or leading staff training initiatives
• Prior management of selection portfolio for a highly-selective institution
• Strong understanding of, and experience with, Technolutions Slate CRM
• Strong knowledge and understanding of the Tufts University undergraduate experience
• Fluency in a second language

Pay Range

Minimum $81,200.00, Midpoint $101,600.00, Maximum $120,900.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
