Counselor Position

This counseling position will focus on supporting students in the third domain of school counseling, social emotional support, including crisis intervention and response, small group counseling, and collaborating with onsite therapeutic services. This position does not provide academic or college/career counseling. Temporary - 1.0 FTE

Job Description / Essential Elements

The counselor is a professional educator with specialized training and appropriate PPS credentials in counseling and guidance whose main focus is on the optimum development and learning efficiency of the individual student. The counselor assists students to participate actively and as successfully as possible in their educational development and career planning. Directly Responsible to: Local principal and/or designated administrator. Duties and Responsibilities: Provide information regarding the school's curriculum offerings and graduation requirements to students, parents, and staff. Assists students to develop a course of study leading to graduation and preparation for college or vocations. Provides information about the competencies required for graduation, college, and vocational preparation to students, parents, and staff. Provides students, parents, and staff resources for gathering educational and vocational information. Provides students, parents, and staff information concerning alternatives to the traditional high school program. Provides information about school and community resources to assist students when they encounter educational difficulties. Provides information about school and community resources for helping students when they encounter personal problems. In Carrying Out Their Essential Duties, the Following Tasks may be Performed: Provide orientation for all incoming students to high school. Organize processes for placing students in the most appropriate educational programs. Assist in monitoring each student's program placement. Assist students in developing individual plans for completing the high school experience. Counsel with students regarding academic performance. Organize procedures for administering and interpreting educational and career tests. Coordinate activities of school career center. Provide liaison with colleges, apprenticeship programs, armed services, business and trade schools, Regional Occupational Program, as well as other sources of career or vocational training. Coordinate systems to disseminate financial aid information. Make referrals to community counseling and assistance agencies. Participate in conferences with students, parents, and/or staff about academic concerns. Refer students with special education needs to appropriate programs in the district, for example Home Study, Adapted P.E., Pregnant Minors Program, Educationally Handicapped, etc. Refer students to alternative educational placement such as the Phoenix Program, Chaparral Evening Alternative, etc. Assist in school curriculum and program development.

Requirements / Qualifications

Credential: Valid California Pupil Personnel Services - School Counseling Credential. To be considered for this position, please attach the following documents to your completed EdJoin application: Previous teaching at the high school level is preferred. Deep understanding of California and GUHSD graduation requirements, community college matriculation, and adult education systems. Well Versed in GUHSD Student Information Systems, Specifically Parent Portal.
