Physician - General Surgery

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), which reimburses a portion of student loan payments. Eligible candidates must meet VHA policy requirements and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility periods (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements noted in the job announcement. Applicants who are pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be considered and tentatively selected, but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements. United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of Medicine (MD) or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. Degree must have been obtained from a VA‑approved school in the year of completion. Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training: Physicians must have completed an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification, or meet one of the following alternatives: - Completed a one‑year post‑medical‑school internship (or transitional year) plus two years of independent practice under a full license. - Completed non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States, with duties related to the position. For residency applicants: Residents enrolled in a program that meets the above criteria are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), subject to intermitten status and scope of practice limitations. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred: Board certification and colorectal experience. Reference: Qualification Standards Physical requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties Join a dedicated surgical care team within the Phoenix VA Health Care System. Perform routine outpatient and inpatient general surgery examinations, diagnoses, and treatments in accordance with the VA’s standards of care. Provide comprehensive patient care, including history, physicals, admissions, and post‑operative follow‑up. Perform a wide variety of general surgical procedures in the operating room, in‑patient rounds, emergency department, and outpatient clinics. Educate patients about their conditions and treatment plans, and obtain informed consent. Maintain electronic clinical documentation and other regulatory requirements in a timely manner. Participate in night calls and perform emergency general surgical procedures. Maintain clinical privileges as a member of the Medical Staff. Serve as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees. Train and supervise medical students, podiatry students, surgical residents, and advanced practice providers (NPs, PAs). Participate in the program’s Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) and meet all eligibility requirements. Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus.
