Police Officer (Recruit)

Job Overview The City of Avondale is seeking motivated, community‑focused individuals for the position of Police Officer (Recruit). This role offers an opportunity to launch a career in law enforcement and make a meaningful impact in the community. Application Process Submit an online application on the City of Avondale Career page ( by July 29, 2026 . Complete the FrontLine National Written Examination (NTN) no later than Wednesday, August 5, 2026 . Eligible candidates may waive the exam if they hold 64 or more college credit hours, or have passed the NTN within the past 12 months. Pass the Physical Agility Test. Complete the Comprehensive Background Investigation and Fingerprinting. Attend a Polygraph Examination. Undergo a Psychological Evaluation. Participate in the Chief’s Interview. Complete the AZPOST Medical Examination and Drug Screen. Receive conditional employment offer upon successful completion of all requirements. Essential Functions Enforce Arizona state laws and City ordinances while providing quality customer service to the Avondale community. Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls for service, conduct criminal investigations, promote public safety through education, prepare reports, testify in court, and complete required training and administrative duties. Officers may also be assigned to specialized units requiring additional training and expertise. Additional Functions Patrol designated areas via vehicle or on foot. Respond to calls for service; conduct interviews and investigations. Gather evidence, write detailed reports, and testify in court as needed. Arrest suspects and enforce local, state, and federal laws. Engage in community policing and problem‑solving initiatives. Perform additional duties such as warrant service, traffic enforcement, training, and booking. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. U.S. citizenship. At least 21 years of age at Police Academy graduation. Valid Arizona Driver’s License at time of hire. Successful completion of the Arizona Police Academy and Arizona Police Officers Standards and Training (AZ POST) Certification. Above‑average physical conditioning including running, climbing, crawling, and ability to meet entry‑level officer fitness requirements. Knowledge of use of force, criminal law, constitutional law, and current tactics used in law enforcement is preferred. Minimum passing scores on the NTN Written Examination: Reading – 70, Writing – 70 (if applicable). Physical agility test passing score.
