Orthopaedic Casting Technician at Howard University. Position Summary Under the direction of the Sr. Director for Clinical Development and the Practice Manager for Orthopedics, the Casting Technician supports patient throughput, clinical assessment, and the management and delivery of durable medical equipment. Principal Responsibilities Apply, adjust, and remove casts. Measure and fit patients for braces and other orthopedic devices. Assist the Orthopedic Surgeon with examinations and medical procedures. Instruct patients in proper care of casts and splints, including walking with casts and boots. Assist patients with the use of crutches and DME. Change dressing and care for wounds. Remove sutures, staples, etc. Order medical supplies and manage DME inventory. Document services performed in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to supervising medical personnel. Provide patient education and instruction as directed by the Physician, making decisions and judgments on phone calls and advising patients per Physician guidelines. Maintain knowledge of and comply with established policies and procedures. Perform other related duties as assigned. Core Competencies Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of CPT and ICD‑10 code reference books. Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions in a medical setting. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to maintain accurate records and recording test results. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Detail-oriented, following established priorities or procedures, and delivering quality customer service. Good judgment, sound decision-making, and professional demeanor. Maintenance of quality control standards. Calm and effective response in emergency situations. Understanding and following oral and written instructions. Minimum Requirements Proven work experience as an Orthopedic Cast Technician or a similar role. Experience with cast application and removal techniques. Knowledge of orthopedic terminology and procedures. Demonstrated experience working with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Preferred: minimum 2 years of Orthopedic Technician experience within an orthopedic practice (or military technical medic training). High school diploma or equivalent; certification as an Orthopedic Technologist (OTC) or Nationally Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
