Veterinarian - Locum

Locum Veterinarian – Hourly rates starting at $120‑$140/hour. Overview The primary purpose and function of the Relief Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and injuries of pets. Responsibilities Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs. Obtain relevant information and history from clients, and maintain complete and proper medical records. Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnosis or treatment, hospital services, and related information. Prescribe and administer preventative care and provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service, including diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries. Communicate diagnosis and treatment plans effectively to the veterinary medical team and clients. Ensure local, state, and federal laws are followed, including maintaining the controlled substance inventory log. Follow state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree. License in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license required. Proven ability to perform all basic surgeries using standard medical instruments and equipment. Strong communication skills: reads, writes, and speaks fluent English with appropriate grammar and vocabulary. Excellent organizational ability, multitasking, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to provide bedside manner and client service; advocate for pet health decisions. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and specialized veterinary software. Ability to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions and to compute rates, ratios, percentages, and convert units. Integrity, independence, and willingness to collaborate with colleagues. Working Conditions Work may require more than 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings. Physical requirements include standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, finger‑hand‑arm dexterity, and visual acuity for keyboard use and equipment operation. Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, as well as potential exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances. Noise level is moderately high; requires good hearing and concentration. Minimal travel may occur for vendor visits and associate education.
