Behavioral Health Intern

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Clinical Manager (Inpatient) or Program Director (Partial/Residential), the Behavioral Health Intern (BHI) provides care and safety to children and adolescents as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The BHI contributes to the formulation of the day‑to‑day schedule, implements and documents a therapeutic milieu, and supports the treatment plan under the direction of the program or shift lead.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment; actively engage with assigned children throughout the shift. Participate in the development and execution of the milieu care plan, document level of patient observation as ordered by the physician, and support visiting parents as requested. Supervise children in daily routines, assist with activities of daily living and basic hygiene needs, and intervene in disruptive or self‑harmful situations with timely therapeutic action. Adhere to all hospital, departmental, and program policies and procedures and report incidents to the charge RN or shift leader. Participate in the patient‑care planning process, assist with the separation process on admission, and document objective observations in shift notes and medical records. Communicate individual patient milieu plans to unit staff and collaborate with other interdisciplinary providers, contributing to treatment team discussions, rounds, and shift hand‑offs. Support and contribute to the development of care plans and behavioral management strategies, including leading community meetings, skill groups, and recreation therapy programs. Handle crisis situations safely, using least restrictive interventions, and maintain appropriate boundaries and therapeutic limits. Seek formal and informal supervision, incorporate feedback for performance improvement, and perform any related duties as directed by the charge RN or shift leader. Perform comparable duties in other clinical settings across the hospital system as needed.

JOB CONTEXT

The BHI works in a psychiatric setting under stressful conditions, caring for psychiatrically impaired, aggressive, and sometimes self‑injurious individuals. De‑escalation techniques are taught to minimize physical intervention. Physical capabilities include lifting up to fifty pounds, bending, squatting, and escorting patients short distances.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE

Current certification in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association. Current matriculation in an accredited Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) program in human services with completed coursework in psychology and social sciences (preferred); Associate’s Degree candidates may be considered. Bradley Hospital Safety Care Specialist Certification provided upon orientation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Academic: Current enrollment in an accredited bachelor’s program as described above. Certifications: Basic Life Support, and safety specialist certification upon orientation. Physical: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, reach, grasp, and perform standing, walking, kneeling, and brief running without limitation.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred: Current matriculation in an accredited Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in human services with coursework in psychology and social sciences.

INDEPENDENT ACTION

Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse or Program Supervisor, following hospital and departmental policies, and refers complex issues to the supervisor.

$18.00 – $27.13
