Lateral Police Officer
This recruitment is to establish a lateral eligibility list for fully funded vacancies. If you are an entry level applicant, apply at The City is now offering a $16,000 signing bonus for lateral police officers!!! Paid in three (3) installments: $5,000 on the first paycheck following hire, $5,000 following successful completion of the field training program and $6,000 following successful completion of the new hire's probationary period. This equates to $16,000 in your first year on top of our competitive wages outlined below.
Lateral Police Officer: At the time of testing, you must be an experienced police officer who possesses a valid police officer certification, in accordance with the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center's requirements.

Education Incentive Pay
January 1, 2022, Education Incentive Pay will be paid as a percentage of base pay:
AA/AS 2%
BA/BS 4%
Physical Fitness Incentive Pay
Employee shall be eligible to receive a Physical Fitness Incentive Pay equal to one percent (1%) of their monthly salary (after successful completion of a physical fitness test).
Longevity Incentive Pay
5th year: 3%
10th year: 4.5%
15th year: 5.5%
20th year: 6.5%
25th year: 8%
Specialty Incentive Pay
Detective: 4% of monthly rate of pay
Corporal Pay: 6.5% of monthly rate of pay
Range Master: 2% of monthly rate of pay
Crime Prevention Officer: 2% of monthly rate of pay
Traffic Officer: 3% of monthly rate of pay
Special Operations Team: 1% of monthly rate of pay
Field Training Officer: 4% of base hourly rate of pay for hours when training
School Resource Officer: 2% of monthly rate of pay
Positions in this classification are responsible for general duty and investigatory police work. Incumbents respond to requests for assistance, investigate criminal activity, apprehend criminals and enforce laws and ordinances. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules, regulations, and policies and normally consists of patrol, preliminary investigation and traffic enforcement duties. Tasks are performed from vehicles, or on foot. Work involves an element of danger and requires physical strength and agility at times to apprehend or subdue persons suspected of crimes. Incumbents function without direct supervision and exercise substantial discretion in determining appropriate response to emergency situations. Police Officers may also be called upon to assist in the operation of the Detention Center and entrusted with the health, safety, security and welfare of inmates.

Essential Functions
- Patrols assigned geographical areas in the City by car or on foot or other means to aid in preventing crime and to enforce federal, state, and City criminal and traffic laws and regulations.
- Observes, reports and acts on conditions conducive to crime and danger.
- Reports traffic hazards and directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow when necessary; disburses unruly crowds at public gatherings.
- Takes command at scene of crime or accident until relieved by a commanding officer; administers first aid and requests medical service as necessary; takes statements, interviewing victims and witnesses; assesses situation and determines appropriate response; records vital information regarding causes and circumstances, including taking photographs and measurements; documents evidence.
- Detains physically law violators or those who may be resisting arrest as required. Activity may require physically subduing suspect, moving through heavy underbrush and trees, jumping fences, climbing onto or into buildings. Activity may require using deadly force to protect self or others.
- Conducts investigation assignments of suspected illegal activity or follow-up investigations of criminal cases; may also conduct specialized investigation in areas of vice, narcotics and sex offenses; may be assigned to detective, traffic, DARE, jail or field training duties.
- Prepares criminal cases for prosecution with either the City or King County Prosecutor; interacts with prosecutors, attorneys and court officials; testifies in court as required.
- Provides general information on laws and ordinances; explains process of filing a formal complaint; directs citizens to appropriate authorities as necessary.
- Serves and enforces civil process issued by the courts to include restraining orders, orders for protection, no contact orders, anti-harassment orders, and subpoenas; serves arrest and search warrants.
- Attends meetings, seminars, and other training classes to maintain current up-to-date knowledge of criminal and civil laws, as well as technical skills in order to remain proficient in the performance of duty; may be called upon to train other employees.
- Prepares and writes a variety of reports and records, such as reports on arrest, property impounded, accidents, offenses, damages to property, and results of investigations.
- Assists in receiving, searching, booking, and supervising prisoners; assures that prisoners receive fair and reasonable treatment; provides food and medical care as necessary; performs jailer duties as required.
- Assures that all equipment used is maintained and operating properly.
- Prepares material to present to training sessions for police officers or other persons as required including schools, businesses, private citizen groups, etc.
- Investigates and inspects persons or businesses for compliance with City ordinance requiring licenses.
- Investigates and inspects weekend or after hours construction activities occurring within the City limits; contacts appropriate City departments.
- Supervises and directs dispatch and correction personnel in the absence of a Sergeant, or higher-ranking officer.
- Performs all of the duties of the Corrections Service Officer in his/her absence as described in the Corrections Service Officer job description.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. Two years of college equivalent to an AA degree, preferably related to police science, criminal justice or a related field preferred. Licensing and Certifications :
- Successful accomplishment of written and oral tests as prescribed by the City of Issaquah Civil Service Commission.
- Ability to pass a police background check including criminal history, credit history, drug exam, polygraph and psychological exam. Lateral applicants are NOT required to complete a Physical Agility Test. Must pass physical and medical requirements of State Retirement System.
- Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
- A driving and criminal record free of any convictions that relate to fitness to perform the job of Police Officer
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to learn and apply principles and techniques of modern crime prevention, investigation, apprehension, rules of evidence and all other aspects of law enforcement.
- Ability to acquire thorough skills in the use of firearms and other police-related tools and when they should be used.
- Some knowledge of Federal, State, County, and City laws, regulation, ordinances, including domestic violence and juvenile criminal justice laws.
- Some knowledge of criminal behavior and causes underlying criminality and social, psychological and physical needs of criminals/inmates.
- Ability to physically handle other persons who may resist arrest.
- Ability to obtain all operator licenses, certifications or permits for equipment used such as radar, breathalyzer, and the like.
- Ability to express self clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Ability to quickly make assessments of emergency situations, determine appropriate responses and act assertively; copes with situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees.
- Ability to satisfactorily complete course work and training such as Basic Law Enforcement Academy established under the Washington State Criminal Justice
