Job Title: Electronics Technician – Soldering, Test, and Repair

Job Description

This role focuses on building, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic circuit card assemblies and related systems. You will perform fine-pitch and through-hole soldering, use diagnostic test equipment to identify failures, and ensure all work meets relevant IPC standards. The position suits a hands-on electronics professional who enjoys detailed bench work, precise craftsmanship, and collaborating with a small technical team.

Responsibilities

• Solder, desolder, and rework micro-components on circuit card assemblies (CCAs) using both fine-pitch and through-hole techniques.

• Set up and calibrate electronic systems and assemblies by following engineering schematics, diagrams, and wiring lists.

• Use diagnostic tools such as digital multimeters (DMMs), oscilloscopes, and signal generators to test electronic assemblies and identify board-level failures.

• Interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and wiring lists to perform accurate assembly, troubleshooting, and repairs.

• Apply IPC standards, including IPC-A-610 for acceptability, J-STD-001 for soldering, and IPC/WHMA-A-620 for cable harnesses, to evaluate product quality and compliance.

• Troubleshoot electronic problems down to component or board level and perform the necessary repairs to restore full functionality.

• Conduct service checks and perform routine preventive maintenance to keep electronic systems and equipment operating reliably.

• Document test results, troubleshooting steps, and repair actions in manufacturing software or log systems to maintain accurate and traceable records.

• Communicate with operators and inspectors to understand reported issues, clarify requirements, and provide progress updates on repairs and builds.

• Provide demonstrations and guidance on the safe use, operation, and basic maintenance of equipment when needed.

• Order or coordinate the production of parts required to complete repairs, rework, or scheduled maintenance activities.

• Maintain detailed logs that capture dates, work performed, and parts used for all repairs and maintenance activities.

• Follow all applicable health and safety rules and regulations, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to ESD-safe handling practices.

• Use hand tools, mechanical tools, and electronic test equipment effectively and safely during assembly, testing, and repair tasks.

Essential Skills

• 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in electronics assembly, testing, or soldering.

• Proficiency in soldering, desoldering, and reworking fine-pitch and through-hole micro-components on circuit card assemblies.

• Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and wiring lists.

• Experience using electronic test equipment such as digital multimeters (DMMs), oscilloscopes, and signal generators for diagnostics and troubleshooting.

• Active Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) certification in at least one of the following: J-STD-001, IPC-A-610, or IPC/WHMA-A-620.

• High school diploma combined with related trade school education or equivalent military electronics training.

• Demonstrated electronics knowledge, including assembly, test, and repair of electronic systems and components.

• Proficiency with hand tools and basic mechanical tools used in electronics assembly and repair.

• Strong manual dexterity and steady hands suitable for microscope work and delicate micro-component handling.

• Consistent adherence to electrostatic discharge (ESD) safe handling protocols.

• Ability to maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation of tests, repairs, and maintenance activities.

• Commitment to following health and safety rules and regulations in a technical work environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Prior experience in a small electronics shop or similar environment where flexibility and cross-functional collaboration are important.

• Experience in servicing, maintaining, and calibrating electronic systems using schematics and diagrams.

• Experience conducting routine service checks and preventive maintenance on electronic equipment.

• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with operators, inspectors, and other technical staff.

• Ability to provide clear demonstrations and instructions on safe equipment use and basic maintenance.

• Organizational skills to manage parts ordering, track maintenance schedules, and keep detailed repair histories.

• Comfort working with both mechanical and electronic aspects of assemblies, including test equipment and hand tools.

Work Environment

This position is based in a small electronics shop with a clean and well-organized work area designed for detailed bench-level work. You will work standard daytime hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The environment includes regular use of electronic test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators, as well as hand tools and mechanical tools for assembly and repair. Work often involves fine, detailed tasks under magnification and requires consistent adherence to ESD-safe handling practices and established health and safety procedures.

This is a Contract position based out of Forest Hill, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
