Summary This position is located in HCC Raeford Road - Fayetteville NC. The primary purpose of the LPN/LVN is to perform assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service, and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving the veteran. Qualifications Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency or accredited by the National League for Nursing (Accrediting Commission - NLNAC) at the time of completion. Licensure: Holds a current, full, active and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical nurse or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico), or District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in written and spoken English as required by VA Handbook 5005. Grade‑specific Criteria: GS‑03: None beyond the basic requirements. GS‑04: Minimum six months of qualifying experience as an LPN/LVN, or graduation from an approved school with one year of nursing care experience in a hospital—or equivalent—plus at least 24 months of approved schooling. GS‑05: Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑04 level or equivalent. GS‑06: At least one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS‑05 level or equivalent. Knowledge and skills required include administration of common oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and, where permitted, intravenous medications; recognition of emergency situations; and the ability to provide comprehensive practical nursing care to patients with diverse physical and behavioral needs. Ability to serve as a responsible member of a nursing team, interacting appropriately with patients, families, and support personnel. Physical Requirements Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity. Ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, pull, and push for extended periods. Exposure to infected veterans and contaminated materials, with required use of protective clothing or isolation precautions. Capacity to manage stressful situations, shift priorities based on veteran needs, and occasionally work with combative veterans due to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. Must complete annual employee health requirements such as screening or testing. Duties Demonstrate proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties while providing care to diverse patient populations. Maintain knowledge and ability to carry out patient care determined by the patient’s condition, utilizing judgment to select appropriate orders, procedures, and treatments. Observe, identify, and respond to patient needs for medication, medical equipment, and patient/family education, considering emotional, socio‑economic, and age‑related factors. Prepare, administer, and document actions taken for commonly prescribed medications as permitted by local facility policies and procedures. Establish constructive and positive relationships with patients and families to promote open communication and socialization. Respect patient/family rights to privacy and dignity; incorporate customer service standards in all interactions. Perform support duties during complex diagnostic tests or specialized procedures. Serve as a preceptor for less experienced LPNs, nursing assistants, and health technicians, providing training for more complex or specialized procedures. Actively seek educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and share best practices with peers. Work Schedule and Compensation Schedule: Monday – Friday, 0800 – 1630. Recruitment Incentive: Not authorized. Permanent Change of Station: Not authorized. Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rate may be granted for exceptional qualifications. Paid Time Off: 37–50 days per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays).
