Mobile Crisis Clinician - LCSW or CMHC preferred

EO/AA Mental health first responders serving Salt Lake County residents for on‑demand, in‑person crisis intervention, de‑escalation, suicide risk assessment, and connection to behavioral health resources. Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) clinicians engage with key community stakeholders such as law enforcement, fire/EMS, shelters, businesses, and private citizens. Receive dispatch referrals for in‑person response from the Utah Crisis Line (988) and directly from 911 partners for immediate deployment. Operate in teams of 2 for community‑based safety and required billing purposes. Act as the behavioral health first responder on scene (and often only responder on scene) with the goal of avoiding law enforcement/EMS response to behavioral health emergencies unless there is a physical safety concern present on scene. This position is partnered with and offers on‑scene supervision to a peer specialist (Certified Peer Support Specialist, Family Peer Support Specialist, or bachelor’s level Certified Crisis Worker). Responsibilities Immediately respond to deployment requests from Utah Crisis Line (988) dispatchers and/or 911 dispatchers for in‑person, crisis and behavioral health emergency situations. Expected response time is arriving on scene within 30 minutes of law enforcement requests and within 60 minutes of community member requests. At the direction of MCOT dispatchers, triage and prioritize community response based on highest acuity behavioral health emergencies. Follow training and certification to act as a mental health officer of the Salt Lake District Court to assess patients’ risk of harm to self/others and determine if involuntary commitment criteria is met for further assessment and/or hospitalization. Engage with the patient, family/friends, other first responders (including law enforcement/EMS), and other individuals on scene to coordinate crisis intervention and collaborative emergency care. Follow all behavior management, de‑escalation strategies, and crisis intervention protocols and procedures. Develop and implement individualized crisis response and safety plan to meet the needs of each patient (and their families as applicable) and coordinate with community partners on contingency plans in case of behavioral health crisis escalation. Assess and provide for the patient’s behavioral health and social needs through connection to the appropriate level of behavioral health care and community referrals based on departmental training, hospital and State policy and emergency service protocols. Attend safety training which involves local law enforcement and/or University of Utah Health Safety and Security, as well as required training around situational awareness, risk assessments for both the patient and others, and appropriate response to potential on‑scene weapons or illegal substances. Provide practicing oversight of Social Service Workers, Certified Social Workers, Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselors, and/or interns in accordance with Utah state law. Assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual. Demonstrate effective de‑escalation techniques and utilization of crisis intervention skills. Assist patients and their families with treatment adjustments including but not limited to working closely with local, state and federal agencies to ensure the patient receives the appropriate assistance. Required Qualifications Hazmat Training within 30 days of hire. Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire. One of the following: Current Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.) certificate for clinical practice in the State of Utah; or Current license to practice as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the State of Utah. * Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with community resources, instructing and supervising Social Service Workers, Certified Social Workers, Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselors, interns and/or other caseworkers. Working Conditions and Physical Demands May exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects while providing patient care. Requires manual dexterity, balance, eyesight, and hearing. May be subjected to hazardous chemicals, adverse weather conditions, communicable diseases and possible verbal or physical abuse due to people being under the influence of illicit drugs or having undiagnosed/diagnosed mental health condition(s). Outreach and engagement may take place in locations not intended for human habitation. May drive a mobile unit vehicle or other vehicle provided by the department; personal vehicle driving may be requested and mileage reimbursement may be submitted for shift‑related driving.
