Principal Engineer

Salary: $87,367 - 135,428 per year Requirements:

• We require a bachelors degree in engineering or a closely related discipline.
• We look for at least five years of professional engineering experience in the assigned specialty.
• We require a North Carolina PE license, or a PE license from another state with the ability to secure NC PE registration within six months of hire.
• We require a valid North Carolina Class C drivers license with a satisfactory driving record, obtained within the timeframe set by the City.

• We manage projects, programs, and assigned departmental operations, including contracts, policies, procedures, goals, budgets, and schedules.
• We support grant applications and grant administration.
• We lead data collection and analysis, engineering studies, and the development of work plans and improvement strategies.
• We perform field inspections and monitor compliance with safety rules, policies, and applicable regulations.
• We prepare, review, and analyze engineering plans, bids, drawings, reports, contracts, agreements, presentations, specifications, and procurement documents.
• We draft ordinances, City Council communications, and technical specifications.
• We coordinate public meetings and provide technical consultation and training to City teams and external partners.
• We design, implement, and evaluate special projects, including drawings and plans when needed.
• We review development projects for water, sanitary sewer, storm, and street systems.
• We may serve as a lead worker or supervisor, including assigning work, monitoring completion, evaluating performance, and supporting hiring, discipline, and termination processes.
