ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Follows all safety and company policies / procedures and promotes a safe culture Confers with operations and observes, tests and evaluates operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose cause of malfunction Repairs, replaces, adjusts and aligns components of machinery and equipment Fit bearings, shafts, attach motors and connect and align couplings and belts to precise tolerances Performs pipe fitting of both threaded and welded pipe of various sizes Test‑run repaired machinery and equipment to verify adequacy of repairs Cleans and lubricates parts, equipment and machinery Examines parts for defects, such as breakage and/or excessive wear Logs/records repairs and maintenance performed Rigging and overhead crane operation, lifting device use and inspection and load calculations Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals Regular, reliable, predictable attendance and performance of the essential functions SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned as necessary JOB SCOPE This position provides support to the Maintenance Department with a primary focus on the repair and maintenance of industrial equipment. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position. INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS This position may interact within all levels of the Northwest Pipe organization. Additionally, this position may have contact with business partners, customers, vendors, visitors and / or government agencies. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES Ability to problem solve, multitask and work independently with attention to detail Basic math skills Ability to work against and meet deadlines Knowledge in the operation, troubleshooting and repair of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment Ability to read and/or interpret mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic blueprints or schematics Understanding of overhead crane trouble shooting and repair Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations Some knowledge and use of Microsoft Office products including Excel and Word and Outlook SAP knowledge preferred but not required EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED preferred Minimum 5 years’ experience and/or training as an industrial mechanic in a similar environment Work hours vary or change based on operational needs, shift work and weekend work as needed Must be able to work overtime as required PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion. Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling to tighten bolts and hydraulic connections. Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Communication: Expressing or exchanging ideas and information accurately, in written or diagram form. Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound. Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm to tighten bolts and pulling hoses. Less than 1/3 of the time: Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow slippery or erratically moving surfaces. Stooping: Positions self to checking air in the tires and checking oil. Kneeling / Crouching: Position self to checking for leaks, cylinders, minor adjustments and control valves. Crawling: Moving about to change cylinders and replacing hoses. Reaching: Grabbing things from a distance above or from the side. Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers such as tightening fittings, lug nuts, and batteries. Physical Requirements Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as those by carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc. Vision Requirements Up to 2/3 of the time: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point) Depth perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships.) Ability to adjust visual focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus) Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors) Weather Conditions Over 2/3 of the time: Both environmental conditions: activities occur inside and out. Up to 2/3 of the time: Outside environmental conditions: No effective protection from weather. Extreme Heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. (Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.) Oils: There is air and / or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids. Less than 1/3 of the time: Inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Extreme cold: Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for period of more than one hour. (Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.) Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals. Atmospheric conditions: The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The worker is required to wear a respirator. The worker frequently is in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, man holes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. Up to 2/3 of the time: Less than 1/3 of the time: Very loud noise Supervision Received Direction: The incumbent establishes methods and procedures for attaining specific goals and objectives, and receives guidance in terms of broad goals.
