Founding AI Engineer

Overview Mason AI has cracked a research problem that went unsolved for over half a century: automatically checking blueprints for compliance with building codes. The challenge is that over a hundred thousand pages of building codes and referenced standards govern blueprints, bottlenecking construction in America. Role We’re looking for a Founding AI/ML Engineer to help us scale solutions from residential projects in California to construction nationwide, working on multimodal AI agents, computer vision evals, and time‑boxed experiments. The impact will be felt in California’s built environment within the first month. Who you are Either a SWE passionate about growing as an ML/AI Engineer, or an ML Engineer fast at prototyping. Can run experiments quickly and estimate which hypotheses have the highest expected value to test. Mission‑oriented, cares about America’s ability to build. Loves ownership, doesn’t mind ambiguity or unblocking yourself. Curiosity of a policy wonk to digest building codes and architectural diagrams. What you’ll do 60+% of your time designing and executing experiments to improve AI agents—building and testing new tools, fine‑tuning models, optimizing prompts, and more. Talk to users and dogfood the product weekly. Wear hats on topics ranging from running computer vision experiments, lightweight data engineering, building internal tooling, improving the webapp, and more. Operating Principles Fail fast and cheap. Slugging percentage matters more than batting average. We can make a lot of mistakes as long as we get a few things right. Intro call (30 min) – Informal chat on your interests and experience. AI Coding & Culture interviews (90 min) – Build a prototype for a slice of our product, using AI coding tools; discuss how you’ve navigated challenges. Paid work trial (3 days) – Run evals for our multimodal agent, generate hypotheses, run experiments, and analyze results. Scheduling is flexible, usually over the weekend.
