WIC Nutritionist Location: Watsonville, CA 95076 | Position Type: Regular | Salary Range: $46.32–$47.76 hourly | Shift: 28.5–38 hrs/week. POSITION DESCRIPTION Under the general supervision of the Program Director, the WIC Nutritionist is a member of the WIC professional staff. The Nutritionist provides technical, educational, interpretive, and office support for the Women, Infants, and Children Program and performs related work as required. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Determines eligibility of potential program participants by obtaining and assessing medical, nutritional, personal, and financial information; reviews eligibility determinations made by others. Explains eligibility requirements and program parameters to staff and participants. Maintains required documentation of all individual and group client contacts in the WIC Web Information System Exchange (WISE). Loads food benefits onto the WIC Card following established protocols. Counsel participants individually on nutrition and breastfeeding matters, develop and record an individualized nutrition care plan, monitor high‑risk clients, and refer other health and social services as needed. Conducts group education on nutrition, breastfeeding, and related health topics; assists with development of new classes and staff training. Promotes positive nutrition, health, and breastfeeding messages in the clinic environment; plans and develops educational displays for clients. Promotes breastfeeding among WIC clients, staff, and community; provides leadership to endorse breastfeeding as desired norm and incorporates promotion in staff training. Attends breastfeeding training as needed. Provides culturally competent, quality customer service to participants and staff with an attitude of leadership, helpfulness, dignity, and respect. Communicates effectively with agency staff, participants, representatives of community agencies, and the public; upholds confidentiality and security policies. Collaborates with other professionals to promote nutrition and breastfeeding among the WIC population; participates on committees and collaborative groups as requested by the Program Director. Stays current with findings, standards, and practices in the nutrition profession; stays up‑to‑date on WIC policies and procedures. Demonstrates commitment to the mission of Community Bridges and the WIC Program. ASSISTS THE SUPERVISING NUTRITIONIST AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR WITH Implementing WIC program policies, procedures, and standards of care for high‑risk clients. Training the WIC Nutrition Assistants to obtain and maintain state certification for determining participant eligibility. Identifying staff educational needs and providing ongoing development. Planning and conducting regular staff training and development. Might function as Nutrition Education Coordinator, Breastfeeding Coordinator, LVL, and/or RBL as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of developing and implementing broad nutrition education programs. Understanding of lifecycle nutrition needs. Knowledge of common medical nutritional risk factors in pregnant and breastfeeding women and small children. Interviewing and counseling techniques. Awareness of local community resources available to the client population served. Skills Planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating nutrition education programs. Training paraprofessionals in policies and procedures. Reading and interpreting complex laws and regulations. Obtaining and evaluating medical, nutritional, personal, and financial information to determine program eligibility. Communicating information to persons of varied socio-economic backgrounds. Completing forms, maintaining records, and making accurate arithmetic calculations. Working independently, organizing work, and setting priorities. Designing forms and procedures. Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with agency staff, community groups, health service providers, human service organizations, professional associations, funding sources, and regulatory agencies. Dealing tactfully, cooperatively, and effectively with staff, community organizations, and the public across diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. Other Requirements Registered Dietitian (R.D.) with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or eligible for R.D. registration. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred. Experience in public health or education preferred. Experience working with low‑income Latino populations preferred. Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint; use of social media and familiarity with virtual platforms preferred. Able to sit and work at a computer for long periods with stretch breaks. Must have a valid California driver’s license, automobile for travel, proof of insurance, and willingness to travel as required. Willingness to work at any WIC site and some evenings and weekends; regular onsite attendance required. Must attend required WIC meetings and trainings. Must pass a criminal background check. Additional Information The position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act. An additional $0.40/hr bilingual differential is available after passing a test administered by HR. This position is represented by the SEIU bargaining unit.
