Medical AssistantThis position is to serve patients by providing pre-operative surgery instructions, retrieving blood specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing EKGs and other screening procedures. The medical assistant works in collaboration with nursing colleagues and other personnel to prepare patients and records for procedures to be performed at Specialists Hospital Shreveport.This position is a PRN day shift in our Pre-Admissions department, availability would need to be Monday - Friday 8 am to 5 pm. There are no nights or weekends available.Essential Job FunctionsGreeting patients reporting for pre-operative lab work.Data entry of physician lab ordersPerforms routine tests as ordered by medical professionals.Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patientCollect blood samples from patientsPractice proper patient identificationLabel vials with patient names, dates and other required informationPerform 12-lead EKGPerform nasal swab tests such as MRSA and/or rapid CovidProvide pre-op surgical instructions to surgery patientsPerform patient pre-surgery education related to medication holding as per surgeon/physician ordersCentrifuge blood samplesPrepare lab specimens for batching and transportBatch & receive labs through computerized interface.Transport specimens to Laboratory from PACU/Inpatient UnitExpect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health statusBe friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patientsCleans and restocks department lab areas.Keep your lab room clean and well maintained at all timesPractice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipmentPerform basic office duties such as making copies and stapling information packetsCall patients for basic chart information such as medication listsPerforms other duties as assigned which can include:Registers patients for lab work, verifies accuracy of insurance information, collects paymentsInput all updated patient information into patient profile and lab account.Works directly with patients and their familiesPrepares patient chartsAdmit and discharge each lab accountFile lab orders for upcoming surgeriesAnswer phonesMaintains as confidential all observed or acquired information regarding the patient, the patient's history, surgical procedure, and perioperative experience.Maintains inter-staff communication as confidential.Assists in the collection of data for continuing quality improvement.Ensures waiting area is kept neat and tidy.RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalentCompletion of a medical assistant program or equivalent experience.Medical assistant certification/license is required through one of the following organizations:NHA - National Healthcare AssociationAAMA - American Association of Medical AssistantsARMA - American Registry of Medical AssistantsSolid computer skills with EMR systemMedical terminology knowledge is a mustExperience is preferred but not required.Physically able to perform CPR.Able to maintain extensive standing and bendingAble to lift a minimum of 15# of equipment.Use of sanitation practices in healthcare settingFollow infectious materials procedures*Benefits are not offered with our PRN positions.Specialists Hospital Shreveport is an equal opportunity employer.
