Firefighter/Paramedic

Polk City Fire Department

Position Summary The City of Polk City Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of Full‑Time Firefighter/Paramedic. The Firefighter/Paramedic will provide emergency services support to the residents of Polk City and surrounding communities and assist administrative functions for Fire Department leadership. Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, the incumbent will perform fire suppression, rescue operations, fire prevention activities (public education, fire inspections, etc.) and patient care in emergent and non‑emergent settings. The position also includes routine vehicle, tool, and facility maintenance and any special assignments as required by the Fire Chief. Duties and Responsibilities Responds to emergencies (fire, medical, rescue, man‑made or natural disasters). Evaluates situations and assumes appropriate Incident Command Structure, directing the response until relieved by a Company Officer. Provides advanced medical treatment, including rapid sequence intubation, chest decompression, intubation, 12‑lead EKG interpretation, electrical cardioversion, intravenous initiation and maintenance, and medication administration. Maintains accurate medical documentation of all emergency medical treatment. Ensures fire code enforcement by conducting fire/life safety facility inspections. Performs routine truck and equipment maintenance, station maintenance, and other facility duties. Executes public education activities, station tours, community/school visits, special events, and classes on life safety and EMS topics. Maintains proper physical fitness through regular exercise. Participates in Fire/EMS related training. May handle inventory and ordering of drugs, supplies, first aid supplies for City Departments, update and maintain SOPs and protocols, and maintain radios and vehicles. If responsible for driving emergency vehicles, adheres to all department policies, traffic laws, and regulations governing safe operation of fire apparatus. Supports the City and Department’s mission, goals and objectives. Performs vehicle/squad checks and completes inventory. Performs annual equipment testing. May provide oversight and direction to paid‑on‑call (POC) Fire Fighters in the absence of an officer. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Skills and Abilities Ability to perform invasive advanced medical procedures in stressful situations. Ability to handle confidential information sensitively. Initiative and strong problem‑solving, decision‑making, and judgment skills. Effective oral and written communication skills. Accurate mathematical skills. Ability to concentrate in diverse work settings. Ability to work a forty‑eight hour shift‑based schedule, including regular weekend and holiday work; schedule may vary by needs. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with co‑workers during shifts. Education, Training and Experience Education: High School Diploma or equivalent with 2–3 years of post‑secondary education preferred. Successful completion of Department orientation within three months of employment. Training Required: Iowa Fire Fighter I certification or equivalent. Iowa Fire Fighter II certification within twelve months of employment. Iowa EMT‑Paramedic; National Registry certification preferred within twelve months after hire. Valid Iowa Driver’s License. Pediatric Advanced Life Support or equivalent. Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Basic Life Support Certification. Emergency Vehicle Operator certification. Experience Required: One to three (1–3) years of Fire Fighting and Emergency Medical Services experience. Required Special Qualifications: Shall generally be available for off‑hour emergencies. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Intermittent periods of standing, walking and sitting. Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 150 pounds. Frequent balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing requirements. Intermittent climbing, stooping, crawling and smelling. Exposure to extreme weather conditions, noise intensity levels, vibration, darkness/poor lighting, moving mechanical parts/hazards, high places, toxic/caustic chemicals, dirt/dust, odors, and other environmental hazards. Moderate use of protective equipment (eye wear, footwear, respiratory aid, hard hat, gloves and protective clothing). Ability to meet all physical standards for the job as specified in NFPA 1582. Ability to perform physical functions while wearing personal protective equipment. Other Necessary Requirements Valid Iowa driver’s license.
