Apprentice Substation Electrician

In this role you will install, maintain and repair high voltage electrical substation apparatus. Responsibilities Under the direction of a qualified person installs, maintains and repairs high voltage electrical substation apparatus. Utilizes meters, testing, and diagnostic devices to perform routine testing and troubleshoot equipment problems. Performs wiring of substation equipment and dismantles and overhauls circuit breakers, transformers, regulators and associated substation equipment. Performs primary electrical switching as directed by the switching center to de-energize equipment for routine and emergency responses. Maintains a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practice. Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned. Supports substation design and technical specifications under the guidance of senior personnel. Maintains clean and organized work areas, including service trucks, control houses, and storerooms. Responds to trouble calls related to substations, often in various weather conditions. Follows strict safety protocols and demonstrates safe driving habits. Completes training courses and competency demonstrations as part of the apprenticeship program. Ensures protection of physical, financial, cybersecurity assets and private customer data. Additional Information The position work mode is on-site; the employee will report to an SCE facility or in the field location. Position is a DOT covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening. The primary work location is Bakersfield, with daily work at various field locations in the AOR. Qualified applications with arrest or conviction records will be considered in accordance with fair chance ordinances. Position requires up to 20% travel and working out in the field throughout the SCE service territory. Position is a NERC/CIP impacted position – a Personnel Risk Assessment or Background Investigation is required before hiring. The apprentice program is a three-year paid apprenticeship; continued employment is contingent on successful completion, obtaining and maintaining a Class A license. Essentials One year of experience fixing mechanical, electrical or electronic components. Valid US Driver’s License. Preferred Interpreting and following complex oral and written instructions. Troubleshooting electrical AC and DC circuits and basic mechanical principles. Utilizing hand tools and handheld power tools. Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Basic knowledge of electrical theory. Use basic computer programs that relate to installing and maintaining substation equipment. Testing Position requires testing; successful candidates will be invited to complete required assessments. Previously passed testees may be exempt.
