Job Description Upper Arlington City Schools Position: Head Custodian Location: Burbank Early Childhood School Time Schedule: 12 months, 5:30 AM - 2:00 PM Salary Rate or Ratio: Hourly $23.91-$26.54 Reports to: Mike Abbott, Executive Director of Operations Employment Status: Classified - Regular/Full Time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Description: Maintain a clean and safe environment for students, staff, and the community. Responsible for the cleanliness of the assigned building and entrance grounds; cooperate in organizing and coordinating daily work schedules, removing snow and ice from entrance ways and walks around the building. Supervise custodial staff assigned to each building. Responsible for performing various minor maintenance tasks as necessary, and maintaining records and inventory. Qualifications High school diploma or general education degree (GED) Four years of related experience Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriate Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to work effectively with others Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing Effective, active listening skills Organizational and problem-solving skills Must be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical and plumbing Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures Trained in the proper care and storage of chemicals Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings, and labels Knowledge of the care of materials, methods, and practices essential to the proper cleaning of a facility Knowledge of the care and proper use of sweepers, vacuum machines, mops, brushes, wax machines, cleaning fluids, and other cleaning materials and equipment Ability to work independently Ability to maintain simple records and make reports Training in OSHA rules and regulations Commitment to high-quality work and craftsmanship in maintaining buildings and grounds Thorough understanding of friendly customer service Ability to log-in and navigate district required software, e.g., Public SchoolWorks, email, etc. Such alternatives to the above knowledge, skills, and abilities as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriate Essential Functions Ensure the safety of students Act as a liaison between custodians and the supervisor Assist in making custodial assignments for extra duty events (athletic, extracurricular, facility rentals) Monitor the cleanliness of the building and assist the building principals and custodial director with the responsibility of evaluating the effectiveness of other custodians in the building, including the night crew Assist the custodial director in developing summer maintenance lists, painting needs, and the summer cleaning plan Assist the supervisor in coordinating the holiday and weekend building checklist as needed Ensure all classrooms are locked (Night custodian) Schedule cleaning to meet the needs of the building and complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner Empty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails, and pencil sharpeners Remove cobwebs and clean windows Polish furniture and woodwork Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials Transport all necessary school custodial supplies Load and unload trucks as needed Ensure the care, condition, appearance, repair, or replacement of all physical equipment, building, facilities, and grounds Clean and sanitize the assigned school, including restrooms, classrooms, spills, and other areas Help with setup and cleanup for various school activities Use, measure, and relabel chemicals Wash all furniture, walls, halls, windows, window seals, and doors Disinfect water fountains and water coolers Remove writing on walls, dry-erase boards, and other writing areas Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy Maintain respect at all times for confidential information Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents Dispose of debris and maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner Report to building administration and or custodial director any damaged, broken, loose fixtures and/or equipment Adjust to various locations and work requirements as needed, perform other duties as assigned by the building administration and custodial director Perform minor repairs as appropriate Request needed equipment, materials, and supplies Perform seasonal duties such as salting and snow removal, litter removal, and other duties as directed by the building administration and custodial director Maintain a clean, safe, and neat boiler room Refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and bathroom tissue in all school building restrooms Maintain emergency exit and security lights Maintain a synchronized clock system Check boiler room nightly for orderliness, safety, etc. Secure the building nightly Repair equipment and buildings as needed Conduct periodical inspections of the building Attend meetings and in-services as required Maintain a daily work routine as established by the building administration and custodial director to adequately service the buildings, grounds, and personnel Check the building to ensure maximum security (walking through the building after school hours and securing doors, windows, security gates, and other entrances) Turning off and on lights as needed Sweep, clean, mop, wash, wax, dust, wipe, scrub, strip, seal, and vacuum all surfaces to maintain cleanliness throughout the building and grounds Keep work and storage areas neat and orderly Tour the building periodically and remain alert for dangerous, hazardous conditions, or items in need of maintenance Set up equipment and furniture for special events and use of the building for school and community functions Maintain records as requested by the building administration and custodial director Check the heating and cooling systems Assist in accurate inventory and control, and assist in ordering all custodial equipment, materials, and supplies Clean and sanitize restrooms Complete paperwork as required by the supervisor Promote good safety practices and procedures Pass on specific oral and/or written instructions for assignments to other custodial employees Maintain records and complete reports Participate in custodial and minor maintenance of buildings Share responsibility for the proper cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings Such alternatives to the above essential functions as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriate Other Duties and Responsibilities Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and building occupants Raise the flag every school morning as required or needed Set up barricades and cones to protect students from traffic Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner Pass on to other employees instructions and requests received from the building administration and custodial supervisor Maintain the building security system ensures building is secure and locked Set up and clean tables and chairs for eating purposes and other activities Climb and remain stable at heights up to 25 feet Replace light bulbs in fixtures as needed (up to 25 feet) Unclog sinks and toilets as needed using chemicals and plungers Maintain an accurate inventory of all custodial equipment, materials, and supplies Perform routine maintenance as required Assist with repairs as assigned Assist in the control of all custodial tools and supplies Assist work crews on assigned tasks and be a team player Perform a yearly inventory of the work area, supplies, and equipment Coordinate activities with PTO's, booster groups, and students for special activities Duties as assigned by the Building level administrator or Director of Custodial Services Equipment Operated Computer and/or handheld device Vacuum cleaners, rotary and guided machines, such as scrubbing and carpet cleaners Wet/dry mops and brooms Various hand tools and custodial equipment, e.g., knives Wet and dry vac Ladders Snow blower and shovels Various power tools Scrubbers and buffers Power washer Stripping machine Additional Working Conditions Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue Occasional requirement to work in high places Occasional requirement to work near moving mechanical parts Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions, e.g., requirement to work outdoors during all types of weather Occasional interaction with unruly adults and children Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles and dangerous chemicals Occasional requirement to lift and carry various items up to a maximum of 65 pounds Occasional requirement to push and pull up to a maximum of 300 pounds (on wheels) Frequent climbing of ladders and stairs Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see (occasionally color vision required), read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, climb, balance, kneel and stoop Frequent repetitive hand motion, e.g., waxing, mopping, sweeping, washing Frequent excessive exposure to loud noises, e.g., power tools, vacuum sweeper Occasional overtime will be requested and expected of the employee Operation of equipment (snow blower, salt spreader, snow shovel) under inclement weather conditions i.e., being prepared to come to work on all scheduled workdays Occasional requirement to travel Frequent excessive standing, e.g., to perform work Being prepared to come into work on all school days Employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance use in the workplace
