Systems EngineerSmithville Communications — Indiana's trusted, locally owned provider of Internet, Voice, Security, and Enterprise data services — is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Systems Engineer to support and enhance our network infrastructure. In this role, you will ensure the reliability, performance, and security of Smithville's server environments while contributing to forward-looking projects that drive innovation and operational efficiency. If you thrive in a hands-on technical environment and enjoy balancing day-to-day operations with strategic system improvements, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact.Operational ResponsibilitiesDesign and implement disaster recovery for the provider-side server network.Perform server and software upgrades to maintain security and performance standards.Continuously monitor and maintain system health, performance and security across server environments.Conduct server operational reviews and troubleshoot issues to ensure uptime and reliability.Process service orders and support operational requests as needed.Strategic Initiative SupportResearch system and software requirements and perform lab testing to evaluate new technologies and solutions.Design, build, and implement infrastructure improvements and new system capabilities.Commission and deploy virtual and physical servers.Perform hardware repairs, upgrades, and installations.What You BringTechnical degree or experience with server hardware, virtualization, and hosted environments.Strong understanding of Microsoft Windows Server and Linux environments.Knowledge of networking fundamentals (DHCP, DNS, firewalls, email/web hosting, network security, database configuration and management, visualization, databases and DEVOPS).Familiarity with system monitoring tools (Elastic Stack, or LOG management, Grafana, SolarWinds, SNMP).Experience with backup solutions (e.g., Rubrik).Knowledge of Debian and RedHat-based systems concepts.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.High attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving and troubleshooting.Effective project management and time management skills.Ability to learn quickly and adapt in a dynamic environment.Work EnvironmentTypical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8am - 5pm; however, may work evenings, and/or weekends as needed to meet critical deadlines or respond to problems.On-call rotation one week per month.Typically working next to loud equipment in data centers.What We OfferCompany-paid Dental, Term Life Insurance & Long-Term Disability.Free degree and certificate programs for eligible employees.Low-cost Medical, Prescription, and Vision plans.Health Savings Account with annual company contributions.401(k) with a company match.Paid holidays.Generous PTO.In-house training programs.Discount on Smithville Products and Services.For over 100 years, Smithville has been and is a locally grown, family-owned, cutting-edge, live-where-we-work, stand-by-our-products, part-of-the-neighborhood, wildly-Hoosier technology company in the heart of Southern Indiana.
