Registered Nurse Operating Room

Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room is responsible for providing skilled perioperative nursing care in a Level I trauma acute care hospital. This role involves supporting a wide range of surgical specialties including general surgery, neurology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, transplant, urology, and trauma cases. The nurse will perform patient assessments, assist with surgical procedures, manage emergency situations, and collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure patient safety and quality care. A minimum of 2.5 years of relevant experience and BLS certification are required, with CNOR certification preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Provide perioperative nursing care in the operating room for diverse surgical cases including trauma, general surgery, neurology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, transplant, and urology.
• Assist with laparoscopic, open, and microvascular procedures.
• Manage emergency responses including code situations, fire safety, and malignant hyperthermia protocols.
• Administer blood products and maintain infection control standards.
• Handle surgical specimens and ensure proper labeling and documentation.
• Utilize specialized equipment such as electrosurgical units, fiber optic light sources, and Hana tables.
• Implement universal protocol procedures including surgical time outs.
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
• Document care and chart using Cerner electronic medical records.
• Adhere to hospital policies and safety regulations.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois or application in process.
• Minimum 2.5 years of operating room nursing experience with general OR and trauma cases.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Experience with Level I trauma cases.
• Proficiency in required surgical case skills including laparoscopic assisted procedures, neurology, orthopedics, plastic surgery microvascular free flap, organ donation, urology, and trauma surgery.
• Knowledge of emergency management including code response, fire safety, latex allergy, and malignant hyperthermia.
• Experience with surgical equipment and instrumentation (electrosurgical units, fiber optic light sources, Hana tables).
• Professional skills in administration of blood products, infection control, radiation safety, specimen handling, and urinary bladder catheterization.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification.
• Experience with Cerner electronic medical records system.

Special Considerations:

• Must live at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible.
• On-call required approximately once per week, though frequency may vary.
• Weekend work required one weekend per month.
• Must work all service lines except cardiovascular (CV).
• Block scheduling is not accommodated.
• All requested time off must be approved by management.
• Facility is a Magnet hospital and Level I trauma center with 562 staffed beds.
• Parking permit required but provided at no cost.

Scheduling:

• Alternate shifts available: 10:45 AM to 9:15 PM or 12:45 PM to 11:15 PM.
• Assignment duration flexible between 13 to 26 weeks with start dates in October, November, or December.
• Guaranteed hours subject to client call-offs up to 36 hours per thirteen-week assignment.
