Bus Driver Trainee

Under direct supervision, a bus driver trainee will serve as a safety monitor while observing the school bus driver to gain experience in the role of a bus driver while working to obtain the appropriate licensing through the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Trainee may drive a school bus with a licensed driver when students are not on board, once the commercial learners permit (CLP) is obtained.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Accurately maintain records, as required by state or federal laws, and Union County Board of Education policies, and/or school-based requests, and adhere to confidentiality requirements of state and federal law.

2. Observe all mandatory safety regulations including but not limited to evacuations and emergencies.

3. Ensure students with seat belts, harnesses, or that wheelchairs are properly secured before the bus begins movement.

4. Actively participate in duties assigned to a school bus driver including pre/post inspections, development of seating charts, addressing student discipline, etc.

Job Functions

1. Complete the classroom and behind-the-wheel training program to obtain the appropriate license requirements.

• Classroom and testing requirements to obtain NC DMV CDL Class B with P &S learners permit within 1st 60 days of employment.
• Behind-the-wheel training required to obtain NC CDL license within 1st 90 days of employment.

2. Serve as a safety monitor on a school bus while observing the practices and procedures of a school bus driver.

3. Effectively communicates with supervision, i.e. Transportation Manager, in the event of an incident/accident involving the health and safety of riders.

5. Establish behavior expectations of students, such as, but not limited to, remaining seated, respecting other students and staff, keeping hands/arms/heads inside of the bus, and keeping aisles clear in the event of an emergency.

6. Maintain the cleanliness of the bus daily.

7. Effectively produce professionally written correspondence across various communication mediums, i.e. cell phone, computer.

8. Perform other duties as assigned.

• First Aid/CPR certification
• High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
• Eighteen (18) years of age
• Clean Driving Record
• Possess or have the ability to obtain an North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL) with both School Bus "S" and passenger "P" endorsements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Commercial driver license (CDL) holders and applicants must meet the medical qualifications set by the N.C. General Statute Medical Qualifications Standards Applicable to Commercial Drivers.

• Ability to work with diverse individuals and/or group.

Customer Relationships

• Requires the ability to interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

Must be adaptable to performing in stressful and emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

Work Environment: Medium - Exert force 10-40 lbs., frequently; and up to 10 lbs., constantly; or a significant amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.

Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.

Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Vision to read printed materials, a VDT screen, or other monitoring devices.

Environmental Conditions: Varies from indoor exposure to outside weather conditions.

Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud.

Hazards: Uneven walking/working surfaces, communicable diseases, cleaning chemicals, lifting/carrying of materials, and power/hand-operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
