Accountant Position

This opportunity is an Accountant position within MS Department of Child Protection Services that will be responsible for a Service Area. The Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services (MDCPS) is committed to protecting and nurturing Mississippi's at-risk children and families. The responsibilities include ensuring the accuracy and completeness of purchase orders and service requests, reviewing and approving all service requests entered in MACWIS prior to the bookkeeper issuing a purchase order in MACWIS for services, assisting the financial staff, ensuring that all necessary documentation for service requests is readily available and can be presented when needed, approving bank statements to ensure accurate financial records are maintained, reviewing and approving monthly bank reconciliations, frequently monitoring account ledgers and account balances to ensure all children's funds are accounted for in the main bank account where Child's Own Funds-Child Support and Child's Own Funds-Special are maintained, reviewing and approving cash and donation receipt logs, reporting issues as appropriate for instances of non-compliance of bookkeepers in their assigned area, ensuring that bookkeepers have Social Security Folders on each child, and they are in accordance with the State Office Policy and Instructions.

Efficient organizational and time management skills, good oral and written communication skills, positive work morale, ability to be flexible in thinking and problem solving, realistic expectations about the difficulty and challenges of the work, and the ability to handle an often-unpredictable work environment are also required.

Preferred qualifications typically require a Bachelor's Degree and 2-4 years of experience and/or appropriate certification. Hiring agency preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in finance, accounting, statistics, business administration, or directly related field; AND 0-2 years of experience in auditing and/or accounting work.
