Social Media Specialist

Reports to: Director of Communications

Work Environment: Remote (must have consistent access to high-speed internet and the ability to communicate across time zones)

Compensation: $ 972 USD/month

Position Summary

Crushing Colonialism is a small, but growing Indigenous founded and operated non-profit organization (501c3) based in the so-called US that uses traditional Indigenous storytelling as a tool to honor and uplift Indigeneity. We work with Indigenous communities across borders, lands, and oceans to increase the pay and employment of Indigenous storytellers (journalists, artists, creatives) while also promoting their work, providing funding for media and arts projects, and increasing access to professional representation.

The Social Media Specialist reports to the Director of Communications and strengthens Crushing Colonialism’s digital presence by supporting daily content management, accessibility practices, community-centered storytelling, and communication workflows. The Specialist ensures that all posts uphold Indigenous values, honor community care practices, and align with our communications strategy, fundraising goals, and accessibility standards.

This role requires excellent communication skills, strong cultural sensitivity, and a demonstrated commitment to Indigenous communities and 2SLGBTQIA+ liberation worldwide. Candidates must have 3+ years of experience working directly with Indigenous communities in communications, digital media, or similar community-centered roles.

Core Responsibilities

Content Creation & Publishing

• Draft clear, accessible, decolonial, culturally respectful captions for all posts.
• Add alt-text, image descriptions, captions, content warnings, and other accessibility elements.
• Create covers, titles, and text for carousel posts.
• Edit short reels when needed, including:
  • Trimming and arranging clips
  • Adding text overlays or closed captions
  • Adding reel covers and logos
• Publish content to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Bluesky, and other platforms as assigned.

Graphics & Design Workflow

• Create simple templates or graphics as needed for the social media posts.

Strategic & Administrative Tasks

• Maintain and update the Social Media Calendar as needed.
• Ensure all campaigns, events, and publications are scheduled properly.
• Stay up-to-date with monthly fundraising pushes and integrate donor-centered messaging as needed.
• Monitor online trends relevant to Indigenous communities, disability justice, arts, media, and global Indigenous movements.
• Propose new content ideas aligned with Indigenous values and organizational priorities.
• Track engagement metrics and assist in periodic analytics summaries.
• Archive all graphics after publication.

Collaboration & Reporting

• Work closely with the Director of Communications.
• Attend periodic communications meetings and reply to chats when needed.
• Coordinate with program staff when posts relate to events, advocacy, or partnerships.

Qualifications

Required

• Minimum 3 years of experience working with Indigenous communities or tribes, Indigenous-centered media, advocacy, or community organizations.
• Strong understanding of Indigenous issues, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, disability justice, and social justice frameworks.
• Excellent written communication skills, including sensitivity to Indigenous and community-centered language.
• Experience creating viral content for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Youtube, Bluesky, and LinkedIn.
• Ability to edit simple reels in Canva, CapCut, or similar tools.
• Strong time-management, organization, and multitasking abilities.
• Ability to meet deadlines and navigate multiple workflows.
• Ability to maintain accessibility standards across content.
• Fluency in English and Spanish.

Preferred

• Educational background in Digital Communications or a related field.
• Knowledge of accessibility tools (alt-text, image descriptions, captions).
• Understanding of analytics and data-informed social strategy.
• Multilingual skills (Indigenous languages, Portuguese, ASL, etc.).
