Assistant Professor

Department Overview

The Division of Vascular Surgery at OHSU provides excellent patient care while maintaining educational and research-rich programs that train surgeons and researchers and enhance their understanding of the vascular system. A special interest in quality outcomes and measurement drives much of the division's research they offer a 2-year vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship as well as an integrated residency program. OHSU's vascular surgeons operate out of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute.

Function/Duties of Position

The Vascular Surgeon is responsible for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with vascular disease using both open surgical and minimally invasive endovascular techniques. The surgeon will provide comprehensive care for patients with arterial, aortic, and venous disorders across ambulatory, wound care, inpatient, and operative settings. Working collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals, the surgeon will deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing clinical outcomes, patient safety, and the overall patient experience.

The surgeon will help lead a multidisciplinary Vein Program at OHSU, fostering collaboration across specialties to improve patient access to wound management, enhance quality of care, expand access to specialized vascular services, and advance innovation in vein therapy and research.

In addition, the physician will serve as the Medical Director for the OHSU Wound Center and will provide strategic oversight of quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives; partner with departmental and hospital leadership at both OHSU as well as our strategic partners to expand accessibility of wound care across the state. They will also work to strengthen; ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards; and promote a culture of continuous quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical excellence at the OHSU Wound Center.

The physician will also contribute to the academic mission of OHSU through teaching, mentorship, clinical research, and scholarly activity, supporting the education and development of medical students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals.

This position reports to (supervisor): Division Head for Vascular Surgery

The duties of this position include:

Vein Program and Wound Center Leadership
  • Lead the strategic development, growth, and operational performance of the OHSU Vein Program, expanding access to care, enhancing clinical services, and establishing the program as a regional destination for excellence in venous disease management.
  • Serve as Medical Director of the OHSU Wound Center, providing clinical, operational, and strategic leadership to advance excellence in wound healing, limb preservation, patient outcomes, and program growth.
  • Oversee the delivery of comprehensive wound care services for patients with complex acute and chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers, arterial ulcers, pressure injuries, surgical wounds, radiation-related wounds, and other non-healing conditions.
Clinical Quality and Program Development
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of evidence-based clinical protocols, care pathways, and best practices that promote high-quality, standardized care across the Vein Program and Wound Center.
  • Establish, monitor, and report key performance indicators, quality metrics, and patient outcome measures to drive accountability, value-based care, and continuous performance improvement.
  • Direct quality, patient safety, and operational improvement initiatives using data-driven methodologies to improve healing rates, reduce complications, enhance patient access, and optimize clinical outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, infection prevention practices, and organizational policies.
  • Provide clinical oversight of advanced wound care therapies and technologies, including debridement, compression therapy, biologic and cellular tissue products, negative pressure wound therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and emerging treatment modalities.
  • Lead multidisciplinary case reviews and quality conferences to evaluate outcomes, identify opportunities for improvement, and promote adoption of best practices.
Leadership, Education, and Scholarship
  • Collaborate with administrative and institutional leadership on strategic planning, business development, resource allocation, staffing models, and capacity management to support sustainable program growth.
  • Supervise and mentor physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and wound care personnel, fostering professional development, accountability, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
  • Partner with institutional quality and safety leaders to support morbidity and mortality reviews, root cause analyses, and implementation of sustainable improvement strategies.
  • Support the academic mission through teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and nursing professionals.
  • Promote and participate in clinical research, innovation, quality improvement, and scholarly activities that advance the fields of wound care, venous disease, vascular surgery, and limb preservation.
  • Represent the Vein Program and Wound Center in medical staff leadership activities, institutional committees, community outreach initiatives, and regional and national professional organizations.
Clinical Practice Responsibilities
  • Provide expert diagnosis and comprehensive management of venous disorders, including chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, venous thrombosis, venous ulceration, pelvic venous disease, and other complex venous conditions, utilizing evidence-based, patient-centered care.
  • Perform the full spectrum of office-based, endovascular, and surgical venous interventions, incorporating advanced technologies and innovative treatment approaches to optimize patient outcomes and experience.
  • Partner with vascular surgery, podiatry, plastic surgery, infectious disease, endocrinology, rehabilitation medicine, nursing, and other disciplines to deliver coordinated, multidisciplinary care for patients with complex wounds and limb-threatening conditions.
  • Foster strong referral relationships with community physicians, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, and regional partners to improve care coordination and timely access to specialized services.
  • Provide consultation services for hospitalized patients, emergency department referrals, and community providers requiring specialized vascular, venous, or wound care expertise.
  • Coordinate care with referring physicians and multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely evaluation, treatment, transitions of care, and long-term disease management.
  • Participate in assigned call coverage and provide timely evaluation and management of urgent and emergent vascular, venous, and wound-related conditions.
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely clinical documentation in accordance with organizational, regulatory, accreditation, and billing requirements.
  • Meet departmental expectations for clinical productivity, patient access, quality outcomes, patient experience, and professional conduct.
Required Qualifications
  • MD/DO (or equivalent) with Board Certification in Vascular Surgery
  • DEA certification
  • Oregon medical licensure and hospital privileges.
  • Strong communication, change management, and team-building skills.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring; academic track record appropriate to rank.
  • Ensure that vascular surgery services are available seven (7) days per week, twenty-four (24) hours a day by participating in group scheduling and call responsibilities.
  • Responsible for participating in daily multi-disciplinary rounds on nursing units.
  • Performs a broad range of vascular surgical procedures with significant competence in both open and endovascular vascular surgery procedures, including aortic disease as well as peripheral arterial disease.
  • Documents clinical care in an appropriate, timely and accurate manner including H & Ps, operation notes, progress notes and DC summaries.
  • Develops a referral base for vascular surgery patients
