Responsibilities Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order; discover and prevent the commission of crimes; check property for physical security. Respond to general public service calls and complaints including domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property control, automobile accidents, robberies, and related misdemeanor and felony incidents. Investigate crimes and suspicious circumstances; collect, process, photograph and present evidence including fingerprints, fibers, blood, and related physical evidence; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects; apprehend and arrest offenders; testify and present evidence in court. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention. Take custody of lost and found property. Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed. Book prisoners in the City & County jail; assist in the custody, care, and welfare of prisoners; transport prisoners. Furnish information and directions to the public. Participate in training courses and programs. Perform specialized duties requiring application of abilities and knowledge acquired through experience. When assigned to Patrol Officer: perform general police work, prevent crime, arrest criminals, enforce laws, patrol areas, inspect, report, nearby conditions, provide safety information, prepare written reports, conduct investigations, and perform specialized tasks. When assigned to Detective: conduct detailed investigations, interview suspects, witnesses, and victims, prepare supplemental reports, file cases, serve subpoenas, and transport paperwork. When assigned to Field Training Officer: provide training and supervision, perform training exercises, evaluate new Officers, coordinate with other officers, and perform patrol duties. When assigned to S.W.A.T. Officer: resolve high-risk situations, perform training with team members, and perform any duties of Patrol Officer, Detective, Field Training, K‑9, or Traffic Officer as assigned. When assigned to K‑9 Officer: perform specialized duties involving a canine, deploy for searches, maintain training, and perform all duties of a Patrol Officer. When assigned to Traffic Officer: patrol designated area in vehicle or motorcycle, enforce traffic regulations, conduct checkpoints, and perform all duties of a Patrol Officer. When assigned to M.A.I.T. Officer: handle major traffic accidents, prepare reports, file paperwork, and perform duties of Patrol, Detective, Traffic, and Field Training Officers. When assigned to Range Master: conduct qualifications and training for firearms use, plan courses, maintain records, and perform the duties of Patrol, Detective, Traffic, and Field Training Officers. When assigned to C.Y.S Officer: serve students, teachers, and administrators at schools, assist with enforcement and fundraising, and provide positive relationships. When assigned to Y.E.S Officer: perform community relations work, coordinate events, address community concerns, and serve as liaison. Other job related duties: perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of Functions and objectives of Federal, State, and other local law enforcement agencies. Basic principles of criminal law. Principles and practices of community policing. Safe driving principles and practices. Skills to Operate firearms and modern police equipment. Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment. Operate a motor vehicle safely. Operate police radio and communication equipment. Abilities to Successfully complete P.O.S.T. training for entry level Police Officers. Learn modern police methods and procedures related to patrol, apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, traffic control, and investigation and identification techniques. Learn modern investigative methods including interviewing and interrogation techniques. Learn law enforcement theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of services and programs. Learn local geography, City streets, public buildings, and businesses. Learn recent court decisions and how they affect department and division operations. Learn self‑defense tactics. Interpret and make decisions in accordance with policies, procedures, laws, and regulations. Gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate, and use facts and evidence. Interpret and explain City and Department policies and procedures. Observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places accurately. Prepare clear and concise reports. Analyze situations quickly and objectively, and determine proper course of action. Act quickly and calmly in emergencies. Meet and deal with the public tactfully and effectively. Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties. Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships. Experience One year of experience working with the public and current employment as a California peace officer. Or one year of experience working with the public and current employment as a peace officer in another State combined with a California P.O.S.T. Waiver of Attendance Certificate. Training Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by completion of P.O.S.T. Academy course of study. License or Certificate Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid P.O.S.T. Academy Graduation Certificate or equivalent certificate. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate. Minimum Qualifications Experience: One year of experience working with the public and current employment as a California peace officer, or one year with another State peace officer plus a California P.O.S.T. Waiver of Attendance Certificate. Training: Completion of twelfth grade and P.O.S.T. Academy course of study. License or Certificate: Valid driver's license, P.O.S.T. Academy Graduation Certificate, and P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.
