Landscaper I

Under supervision performs routine tasks related to grounds maintenance; do semi-skilled grounds construction and maintenance work; operate small hand-powered equipment; maintenance of Driving Range. Provides for the care and maintenance of the turf area, ornamental trees, shrubs, bedding plants, and flowers. Occasionally works in wet or humid conditions (non-weather); near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles, with toxic or caustic chemicals. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. Occasionally experiences vibration.


Essential Functions:

• Prepares soil for planting beds and lawn areas.
• Operates mechanical equipment such as mowers, weed trimmers and utility vehicles.
• Plants trees, shrubs, turf grass and flowers.
• Prunes and trims trees and shrubs.
• Maintains a clean landscape environment through trash removal and debris cleanup.
• Incorporate safe work practices in job performance.
• Maintains landscape through application of mulch, water, fertilizer and grooming.
• String line trimmer and blower operation.
• Water sealing and maintenance of Par Course Equipment.
• Repair of pathways.
• Painting curbing and speed bumps.
• Assist in over-seeding lawns.
• Repair irrigation as needed.
• Fertilize lawn areas.
• Operation of tee & greens mowers.
• Maintains flexibility to take on new and different tasks as directed by the Department Manager.
• Performs labor in project work.
• Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.
• Attend staff meetings.
• Attend educational seminars when available.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Able to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; to print and speak simple sentences.
• Ability to apply simple math; to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divided with 10's and 100's.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- and two-step instructions; to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• One-month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Valid Driver's License.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

• Must be fluent in English; bilingual preferred.
• Must possess good verbal, written and listening skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Meet the physical demands of the position: Frequently stands and walks; uses hands to finger, feel or handle; reaches with hands and arms; stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls; talks or hears. Occasionally sits, climbs and balances, tastes or smells. Frequently lifts up to 80 pounds. Must be able to be on feet 10 hours a day outside.
• Vision - distance and color vision as well as depth perception. Ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Job involves working:
  - under variable temperature conditions (or extreme heat or cold).
