Executive Underwriter, Equipment Breakdown

Responsibilities Develop, grow, and maintain a profitable, diversified book of business through marketing, underwriting decision making, building mutually beneficial agent/broker relationships, establishing a market‑facing leadership presence, and applying underwriting tools, systems, and expert resources. Guide and mentor less experienced underwriters in their respective area of expertise, including regular employee coaching and providing feedback to management on employee progress. Risk Selection: review, rate, underwrite, evaluate, or assess insurance applications by qualifying accounts, identifying, selecting, and assessing risks, determining premiums, policy terms and conditions, obtaining approvals, creating and presenting proposals to agents/brokers, and successfully negotiating deals. Agent/Broker Relationships: demonstrate a high level of responsiveness and focus on supporting agents’ and brokers’ objectives; establish, develop, and maintain successful relationships to facilitate marketing of products through responsive service, site visits, in‑person renewal meetings, and enhanced knowledge of their customers’ businesses; develop a strong personal brand to build and maintain a long‑term quality pipeline. Portfolio Management: manage a book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying opportunities for improved growth, profit, and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share by attending and making marketing calls to brokers for cross‑marketing. Documenting the Deal: document files reflecting a solid thought process and decision making through comprehensive account reviews, sign‑offs, and referrals that comply with state regulations, letters of authority, and underwriting guidelines. Leadership: formally and informally guide, mentor, and coach underwriters and account analysts in both technical and professional skills. Continuous Improvement: actively participate in continuous improvement by engaging in problem‑solving activities and using continuous‑improvement tools to support the team's work. Qualifications Degree in Business or equivalent, typically required. Minimum of 7 years of progressive underwriting experience (typically 10 years or more) and/or other related business experience. Professional insurance designation (CPCU or equivalent) preferred. Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility. Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives for underwriting or training purposes. Effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders. Comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and capability to define and implement necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows.
