The Transplant Clinic @ The Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine is looking to have a Medical Assistant II join the team.

Day Shift

Summary:

The Medical Assistant (MA) II assists the practice manager and physicians in maintaining a patient/customer focus, supports the delivery of high-quality care, shares a passion for patient and customer centered care, and assists in meeting or exceeding patient satisfaction and financial/operational targets. The MA II consistently demonstrates and role models safe practice within the organizational professional & clinical care model. The MA II provides patient care through performance of patient preparation, interviewing, technical tasks, and patient/family communication; and helps support front line operations participating in quality initiatives, infection control activities, staff education, training, and evidence based practice.

Responsibilities:

• Patient Care Accountabilities: Evidence Based Practice and Research: The MA/CSA, in partnership with clinical leadership, develops resources to support evidence-based practice (for example, supply checklist, procedure set-up document). Safety: The MA/CSA minimizes risk of harm to patients, families, providers and self through system effectiveness and individual performance participating in the identification, prevention, and communication of actual or potential safety threats to colleagues.
• Professionalism: The MA/CSA demonstrates a commitment to the profession through lifelong learning, advancing community outreach, and leads regulatory readiness activities.
• Leadership: The MA/CSA effectively collaborates and applies innovative, systems thinking to engage in evidence based problem solving and decision making as well as precepting new & experienced employees and may serve as a competency validator to deliver safe, quality patient care.
• Informatics/Technology: The MA/CSA serves as a role model in utilizing appropriate information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, ensuring comprehensive rooming documentation according to practice standards.
• Teamwork: The MA/CSA provides recommendations to leadership and effectively engages in the process of cooperation & collaboration in an effort to enhance healthy team dynamics and provide for safe, quality outcomes for patients.
• Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI): The MA/CSA actively participates in PI/QI activities to advance clinical care & promote effective clinical workflows. Promptly rooms patients, using EMR to alert provider that patient is ready. Observes patient condition and communicates any abnormal data or changes to provider. Assists patients as needed. Obtain specimens for testing if applicable and according to practice policy and procedure. Performs EKGs and other outpatient screening tests as per MD order. Assists with minor surgical procedures. Responds appropriately to emergency/code situations. Reads normal PPD results. As per practice/department protocols and/or measurements: answer phones, manage/handle patient requests and route appropriately, retrieve voicemails, take accurate and thorough messages and route appropriately through EMR, in a timely manner. Completes medical forms and other clinical requests for information as appropriate and required. Prepares and sends patient correspondence. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory standards (ex TJC, DOH, FDA, HIPAA, HCFA, DPW, LCGME, SCGME, etc)
• Environmental / Safety Accountabilities: Adheres to universal body fluids precautions and infection control policies including waste disposal, instrument processing, patient room preparation. Stocks and maintains pars in the medication carts. Retrieves supplies from secured areas and medications/blood products from tube system. Secures stock items in appropriate location. Delivers patient specific medications/blood products to the assigned nurse or provider. Maintains temperature log for refrigerator and/or room temperature as needed.
• Patient Service (as needed or required by the role): Schedule patient appointments, communicating changes and confirming appointments, and, as needed, offering alternative and canceling/rescheduling appointments. Responsible for arriving/departing activities of patient at practice and performs point of service activities: collects copays and records accurately, obtains necessary signatures/forms, obtains insurance cards and referrals/authorizations, updates appointment status in EMR, and finalizes all check-out procedures. Maintains up to date knowledge of insurance requirements pertinent to patient service and billing procedures: including basic knowledge of all managed care plans and which insurers require a copayment or referral. Validates patient demographic/insurance information and/or registers new patients into EMR using established protocols Records receipts accurately to ensure end of day reconciliation participates in cash reconciliation delineations. Resolves work queues and/or issues from front-end reports proactively prioritizes recovery of missing charges. Orders supplies for the office and generates front-end process reports.
• PSP/PPC MA II Specific, if applicable as per regulatory guidelines: Administers prescribed medications, gives injections and vaccines reads normal PPD results, under the direction of the provider/ documents in EMR. Promptly performs call-backs as directed by provider, giving patients information within their scope of practice. Provides patients with follow up care instructions. Maintains medication storage closet inventory and security checks expiration dates removes outdated items. Performs daily emergency supply cart checks as assigned.

Credentials:

• Medical Assistant (Required)
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
• BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association

Education or Equivalent Experience:

• H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
• And 2+ years Medical office experience, or 4 years of customer service experience. Advanced degree (Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's) may be considered in lieu of experience. And 2+ years as MA/CSA with Penn Medicine
• Other (Required)
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program (or higher level equivalent). OR: 7+ years experience working as an MA may be considered in lieu of MA program completion. And 2+ years as MA/CSA with Penn Medicine
• Associate of Arts or Science
• And 2+ years as MA/CSA with Penn Medicine
