Professional Benefits Professional growth and development opportunities Healthy work/life balance for all employees Work for a recognized agency; CTDOT was recently named Employer of the Year by the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers Standard State employee benefits – see the State Employee Benefits Overview for details Position Highlights Full‑time, 40 hours per week Location: District 1 – Middletown, Southington, CT Valid driver’s license and pass a pre‑physical examination Shifts vary; weekend coverage is mandatory Work Schedule Example Shift patterns may differ; below are examples for Middletown and Southington: Middletown – Wednesday – Sunday: 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM; Monday, Tuesday: OFF Southington – Monday – Thursday: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM; Friday, Saturday: OFF; Sunday: 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM Role Responsibilities Grass cutting, trimming, shrub bed maintenance, hedge row trimming, litter pickup, snow and ice removal Continuous cleaning of rest‑area grounds and buildings Minor maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, unplugging toilets, performing basic repairs Report surface water leaks or plumbing malfunctions to supervisor immediately Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports for the facility – water, heating fuel, propane, generator, fire extinguisher levels Monitor and report on consumable inventory (fuel, etc.) to avoid run‑out Perform seasonal work – keep walkways, stairwells, and pathways clear of snow and ice Collect and remove leaves, branches and other debris; conduct spring cleanup Assist the traveling public, service personnel, and vendors as needed Other related duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of physical properties of standard maintenance materials Knowledge of mechanical principles and basic maintenance trade practices Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication ability Ability to use hand and power tools and perform minor repairs to simpler mechanical equipment Ability to operate maintenance equipment such as snow blowers, push mowers, zero‑turn mowers, weed whackers Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions Minimum Qualifications Any experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above. Preferred Qualifications Experience in maintenance trade practices, using maintenance materials, applying mechanical principles Experience working with a diverse group of individuals in a customer‑service setting Experience communicating in person, over the phone, and in writing with co‑workers and the public Experience operating maintenance‑related equipment (e.g., snow blowers, push mowers, zero‑turn mowers, weed whackers) Special Requirements Possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license (and any other required licenses) Attendants must be able to train new employees and relieve employees to perform the duties of the class Uniform required on site at all times during the shift Physical Requirements Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity to perform the duties. A physical examination will be required. Working Conditions Exposure to extreme weather, occasional lifting of heavy weights (and frequent lifting of moderate weights), high‑risk road and traffic conditions, poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants, and loud machinery.
