Bridge Maintenance Specialist

Overview The Transportation Division of the Department of Community Services at Multnomah County is seeking an experienced Journey-level Bridge Maintenance Specialist to ensure the safety and longevity of the county’s iconic bridges. In this role, you will maintain a variety of steel and concrete bridge structures through hands‑on repair and seasonal emergency response. Responsibilities Perform maintenance and repairs using hand and power tools and equipment – metal, wood, concrete, pipes, cables, etc. Operate tools and equipment such as wrenches, pipe cutters, trowels, tape measures, grease guns, chain hoists, stationary cranes, grinders, air tools, saws, tube benders, coping machine, drills, generators, weed eaters, chipping guns, iron worker, torches, pressure washers, winches, concrete mixers, sand blasters, AC/DC welders, torches and plasma cutter. Replace sidewalks, concrete walls, steel railings, repair bridge joints, and perform cribbing and jacking of structures. Assist with design of bridge improvements and fabricate/install catwalks, scaffolding, and handrails to OSHA safety standards. Perform preventive maintenance such as greasing, lubricating, painting, and power washing. Operate equipment including flusher trucks, loaders, truck‑mounted cranes, ten‑yard dump trucks, skid‑steer loaders, backhoes, dozers, excavators, inspection boats, bucket trucks, snooper trucks, aerial work platforms, spider baskets, and hydro platforms. Maintain traffic control with appropriate equipment while working over traffic (boats, cars, pedestrians, cyclists). Use personal fall protection, rigging techniques, ropes and pulleys for raising and lowering tools and materials to the tops of bridges and below. Respond to emergencies and conduct winter operations such as plowing, sanding, shoveling snow, operating walk‑behind snow blowers, and applying ice‑melts to lift spans, roadways, sidewalks, and stairs. Perform strenuous manual labor, including climbing ladders, walking up and down stairs, kneeling, lifting up to 100lbs, and working at heights up to 160ft in all weather and heavy traffic conditions. Three years of bridge maintenance or construction experience, including welding and practices in lifting, supporting, and replacing major structural components. Valid ClassC driver license. Additional specialized training and experience in metal work, bridge repair/maintenance and/or construction operation, concrete work, or a related field. Preferred Qualifications Ability to read, understand, and calculate material lists from blueprints. Valid ClassA Commercial Driver License with air‑brake and tanker endorsement within 12months of employment (county will pay for the process). Valid NCCCO Certification, Oregon Boater Education Card, and Flagger certification within 12months of employment (county will pay for the process). Transferable skills gained through education, work experience (including military), or life experience relevant to this position. Type of Position This hourly, union‑represented position is eligible for overtime.
