In this role, you'll use your creativity and decorating skills to bring customer visions to life, from birthday cakes and everyday treats to wedding cakes delivered and set up on site. You'll also serve as a lead for part-time employees and collaborate closely with the bakery team to keep production running smoothly.If you have a passion for decorating, an eye for detail, and enjoy working with customers to create something memorable, we'd love to have you on our team.What You'll DoNo two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting every customer with a smile, taking orders at the bakery counter, and assisting them with their needs throughout the storeCheck orders for the day, set up a timeline and production schedule, and check cake orders daily for details including size, deco pack, icing needs, and datesDecorate bakery items in a timely manner, keeping current on new designs and trendsDevelop daily bakery orders for bakers including cakes and sizes neededTrack daily retail production and identify tasks to be completed with co-workersCheck product dates, pull cases for work, and list items to fill or replaceOrder supplies for the decorating area and check off the order upon receiptDeliver product and set up wedding cakes on site outside the storeCommunicate with the Bakery Manager daily regarding displays, weekly ads, and special needsOperate as a lead with part-time and other employees by instructing and reviewing their workParticipate in employee cross-trainingPractice proper sanitation procedures and keep the work area clean, neat, and safe at all timesAnswer the phone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call, including taking product ordersFollow Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all department and company guidelinesPitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come upYour SkillsTo be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:Bring commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for delivering an outstanding customer experienceApply strong decorating skills and stay current on cake design trends and techniquesSolve practical problems and follow instructions carefully in a fast-paced environmentApply math skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages in day-to-day tasksLead and guide part-time employees, providing instruction and reviewing their workCommunicate clearly with customers, co-workers, and the Bakery ManagerReporting RelationshipsAccountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, Health Wellness Home; Bakery Department ManagerEducation and ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent experienceSix months or less of similar or related work experience; we'll provide all the training you need to succeedPhysical RequirementsFrequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areasWhere applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparationWhere applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipmentWhere applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standardsPerform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation dutiesWorking EnvironmentThis is a fast-moving role with significant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. You'll work in the bakery department and can expect exposure to flour dust, noise, temperature extremes, cleaning chemicals and solvents, and residual fumes.
