School Nurse

Reports to: Head of School

Location: Saint Theresa Catholic School, Sugar Land, TX 77498

General Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Head of School and the Office Manager, the School Nurse is responsible for supporting the health and well-being of students and maintaining health services that contribute to a safe and healthy school environment. The Nurse provides care for students who become ill or injured during the school day, administers medications in accordance with school policy, and maintains student health records and documentation. Through attentive care and professional judgment, the School Nurse helps ensure that students are able to participate safely and fully in the life of the school. The Nurse coordinates health-related procedures, assists in implementing emergency preparedness and safety protocols, and communicates with parents, faculty, and administration regarding student health matters and school health procedures. In keeping with the principles of Catholic classical education, the Nurse supports the mission of Saint Theresa Catholic School by promoting respect for the dignity of every human person and encouraging responsible care of the body as a gift from God. The Nurse has decision-making responsibilities within essential job functions in keeping with school policies. The position is hired and evaluated by the Head of School.

Essential Job Functions:

• Support and uphold the mission, philosophy, and Catholic identity of Saint Theresa Catholic School and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
• Serve as a visible witness to the teachings of the Catholic Church through personal conduct and professional responsibilities
• Participate actively in the faith life of the school community
• Serve as the primary health advocate for students and assess student health needs
• Provide care for students experiencing illness or injury during the school day
• Administer medications to students in accordance with physician orders, parent authorization, and school policy
• Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in accordance with school policy and applicable regulations
• Coordinate and conduct required student health screenings including vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings as required by Texas law
• Communicate with parents regarding student illness, injury, or health concerns during the school day
• Assist administration in maintaining emergency health procedures and preparedness for medical emergencies
• Maintain appropriate medical supplies and equipment necessary to operate the school health office
• Demonstrate compassion and attentiveness when responding to student health needs
• Participate fully in faculty meetings, professional development, committees, and assigned school initiatives

Supervision Given and/or Received:

• Reports directly to the Head of School
• Works under the daily operational supervision of the Office Manager

Internal Contacts: Effectively communicates with administration, faculty, and school staff.

External Contacts: Effectively communicates with parents, healthcare providers, local health agencies as needed, as well as other schools, churches and employees throughout the Archdiocese.

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

• Required to work a full school day in a standard school environment
• Required to manage situations involving student illness or injury
• Required to work in standard office and school environments
• Required to occasionally lift, carry, or move materials or equipment weighing up to approximately 35 pounds
• Required to sit, stand, bend, reach, hear, see, and speak on a daily basis
• Required to perform repetitive tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading
• Required to monitor students in a variety of locations including those with noise, activity, and inclement weather

Travel Requirements: No travel required other than occasional professional meetings or school events

Education and Experience Preferred:

• Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) licensed to practice in the state of Texas
• Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid required
• Certification as a state vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screener as required by Texas law
• Experience working in pediatric health, school health, or a related healthcare field preferred

Knowledge and Skills Preferred:

• Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
• Knowledge of student health services and school health practices
• Knowledge of health screenings required by Texas law
• Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
• Ability to organize and maintain accurate records
• Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Skill in job-appropriate technology and health record systems
