Part-Time Mechanic
A school bus mechanic maintains, diagnoses, and repairs a school district's vehicle fleet to ensure safe student transportation. Responsibilities include performing routine preventive maintenance, conducting Department of Transportation (DOT) safety inspections, troubleshooting diesel, EV, and gasoline engines, and maintaining accurate repair logs.
Core Responsibilities
- Preventive Maintenance: Run scheduled safety checks, fluid changes, and tune-ups every 90 days or per district policy.
- Diagnostics & Repair: Fix brakes, steering, suspension, transmissions, and electrical systems on diesel and gas buses.
- Safety Inspections: Prepare vehicles to pass state and DOT safety compliance checks.
- Emergency Response: Provide roadside assistance or recovery for buses that break down on route.
- Record Keeping: Log all repair work, parts usage, and inventory stock digitally or on paper.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: High school diploma; trade school or technical training in diesel/automotive mechanics is preferred.
- Licensing: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, or the ability to get one within 90 days of employment.
- Certifications: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in medium/heavy truck or diesel mechanics are preferred.
- Physical Needs: Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work in tight spaces, and use heavy shop equipment.
