Project Engineer Sr - Generation Projects (Birmingham or Atlanta)

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

This position will be based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL or a facility in the Atlanta, GA metropolitan area. Hybrid work schedule: four (4) days in-office or at a plant/field site and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment). This position will require a mix of both field and office work. Field work may include site visits to various generating facilities and may require overnight travel. This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with internet access. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

POSITION SUMMARY

A Project Engineer acts as the engineering manager for design and procurement activities for a variety of projects throughout Southern Company. Projects range from large capital to small maintenance (retrofits) for existing fossil and renewable electric generating facilities. The role manages engineering scope, budgets, and schedules, and serves as the main point of contact for engineering deliverables to plant or TSS project managers. The Project Engineer works with Design and Technical Services disciplines (Civil, Environmental, Electrical, I&C, Mechanical) to ensure adequate and qualified resources are assigned to projects. They anticipate changes in project scope, budget, and schedule requirements, develop and communicate mitigation plans, identify lessons learned, and facilitate resolution of engineering and vendor-related issues. The Project Engineer must maintain accurate project records in various project management applications.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification A Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus. Technical & Leadership Experience 5+ years’ combined experience in either of the following: Design or project management related to engineering, procurement, construction, or startup for electric utility generation systems. Experience working in or supporting power plant operations or electric utility generation systems. Formal or informal experience in a lead role (directing activities of direct reports or project team members). Budget and schedule management. Understanding of project change control. Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes. Strong management and organizational skills. Ability to build and maintain an attentive, productive, diverse team. Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies. Ability to work independently with little direct supervision to advance projects to successful completion.
