Job TitleStreet Maintenance WorkerLocationMebane Public Works, NCSalary$37,128.00 - $54,538.00 AnnuallyJob DescriptionThis position performs routine manual labor to repair city streets and culverts, cemetery grounds, or other city structures, facilities, and grounds. Employees in this class perform routine manual work in providing safe and attractive structures, facilities, streets, and parks and grounds for use by city residents. Work includes general landscaping, digging, equipment maintenance, leaf collection, installing or patching street pavement with asphalt or concrete, driving a city truck, loading and unloading crew supplies, directing traffic, and other labor-intensive tasks. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a Public Works maintenance supervisor or crew leader. Work is evaluated for safety, operation, and overall appearance of city structures, and is checked daily by visual inspection and feedback from citizens.Examples of DutiesDig, patch, and backfill pavement or grounds using shovels, dump trucks, jackhammers, and tamps; assist skilled maintenance staff in the repair and patching of streets. Remove and replace concrete sidewalk, driveway aprons, curb and gutter, and other as needed. Operate a dump truck to and from worksites hauling debris, mud, and materials used for backfilling. Perform general landscaping work, including operating motorized and push mowers, trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, and tree removal. Rake leaves into vacuum equipment and operate a vacuum truck if trained and needed. Participate in street and parking lot snow and ice plowing operations. Spread ice melting materials on sidewalks and shovel snow and ice from walkways. Works with a crew to assist with garbage, yard waste, and brush collection. Perform other general maintenance duties as assigned.QualificationsGeneral knowledge of manual labor and maintenance work performed by the City of Mebane. Ability to receive, understand, and successfully carry out oral and written directions. Ability to perform manual labor tasks such as seeding, disbursing straw, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, raking, and erecting proper signage to denote crews at work in varied environmental conditions including heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions. Ability to operate a mower, tractor, dump truck, leaf blower, weed eater, tamp, jackhammer, and other maintenance equipment. Ability to identify and report maintenance needs or safety issues to a lead worker or supervisor. Ability to establish and maintain relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. Ability to effectively communicate with the public and demonstrate courtesy and tact. Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time and be available to work overtime and weekends if required. Ability to work as a member of a work crew or team on assignments.General knowledge of safe working practices.Ability to respond back to work for emergencies or in support of other personnel as required.Physical RequirementsWork in this position is heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employees must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned as well as recognize and apply safety standards to work performed. Employees are subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat as well as noise levels requiring workers requiring the wearing of protective gear. Employees are subject to physical workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, and potential exposure to chemicals. Employees are subject to atmospheric conditions including fumes, odors, dusts, dirt, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Employees may work in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosures, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.Education and ExperienceGraduation from high school or GED, and some experience in building or grounds maintenance or using concrete and asphalt is desired; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position.
