Oncology Data Specialist [Remote]

This Oncology Data Specialist role plays a critical part in supporting national cancer registry operations within a healthcare environment dedicated to veteran care. You will be responsible for capturing, validating, and maintaining high-quality oncology data to ensure accurate reporting across multiple regulatory and accreditation bodies. Working within established VA and national standards, you will abstract complex clinical information, assign cancer staging classifications, and maintain complete patient records throughout the care continuum. The role requires strong attention to detail and deep knowledge of oncology coding systems to ensure data integrity and compliance. You will collaborate with clinical teams and registry stakeholders to support quality assurance initiatives and improve cancer data accuracy. This position directly contributes to public health reporting and cancer research by ensuring reliable, standardized oncology datasets across the system.

Accountabilities:

• Perform cancer casefinding, accessioning, abstraction, and documentation of oncology cases using approved cancer registry systems.
• Complete full NAACCR data sets, including VA-specific fields, ensuring accurate and comprehensive patient records.
• Assign AJCC TNM staging and document tumor characteristics, diagnostic findings, treatment details, and disease progression data.
• Maintain patient follow-up records, including vital status, disease status, and supporting clinical documentation.
• Ensure compliance with VA, SEER, AJCC, CoC, NCI, WHO ICD-O, and NAACCR coding standards and reporting requirements.
• Conduct data quality checks, identify inconsistencies, and correct registry data within required timelines.
• Prepare and submit registry reports for internal and external stakeholders, including VA Central Cancer Registry and state registries.
• Participate in cancer committee reviews and quality assurance initiatives to improve data accuracy and completeness.

Requirements:

• Active ODS-C (Oncology Data Specialist–Certified) credential in good standing.
• Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience in cancer registry operations, including abstraction and staging.
• Strong knowledge of oncology data standards, including NAACCR, SEER, AJCC, and related coding systems.
• Experience working with cancer registry software and clinical data abstraction tools.
• Ability to interpret complex medical records including pathology, imaging, laboratory, and treatment documentation.
• Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy in data reporting.
• Understanding of healthcare compliance, confidentiality, and federal data security requirements.
• Ability to manage deadlines and maintain certification through continuing education requirements.
