If you're passionate about shelter medicine, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and want your work to directly support life-saving efforts, we'd love to meet you.What You'll DoAs a Veterinary Support Associate, you'll provide high-level medical and surgical support while helping ensure exceptional care for animals throughout their treatment journey.Key responsibilities include:Assisting veterinarians during examinations, diagnostics, and treatmentsDrawing blood, placing IV catheters, administering medications, and providing nursing careCalculating drug dosages and fluid rates accuratelyMonitoring anesthesia and assisting with surgical preparation and recoveryIntubating, extubating, and monitoring patients during proceduresPerforming in-house laboratory testing and radiographsTriaging incoming medical cases and communicating patient status to veterinarians and staffProviding care for hospitalized, isolation, foster, and recovering patientsMaintaining accurate medical records and updating shelter software systemsSupporting vaccination and treatment protocolsProviding medical care for animals in parvovirus and ringworm isolation wardsTraining and assisting volunteers, externs, and team members as neededAssisting with humane euthanasia procedures when necessaryCollaborating with veterinary, shelter, foster, and adoption teams to ensure the best possible outcomes for animalsWhat We're Looking ForSuccessful candidates are:Passionate about animal welfare and shelter medicineSkilled in veterinary patient care and clinical proceduresCalm and confident when prioritizing multiple medical casesCompassionate toward animals and professional when interacting with clients, volunteers, and coworkersDetail-oriented with strong medical documentation skillsAdaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where every day is differentTeam-focused and committed to HSPPR's mission and valuesQualificationsRequired:High School Diploma, GED, or equivalentPrior animal handling experienceMinimum of two years of experience in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or similar veterinary settingAbility to effectively communicate, solve problems, and perform medical calculationsPreferred:Veterinary Assistant Certificate from an accredited institutionEnrollment in or completion of a Veterinary Technician programPrevious shelter medicine experiencePhysical RequirementsThis active, hands-on position requires:Standing and walking for extended periods throughout the dayFrequent lifting and moving of animals and equipment weighing 25+ pounds and occasionally 40+ poundsFrequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and reachingWorking around animals, animal allergens, cleaning agents, and varying environmental conditionsExposure to medical procedures, infectious disease wards, and shelter environmentsScheduleFull -time scheduleRegular schedule includes at least one weekend dayMay include evening, weekend, and holiday shifts based on operational needsWhy Join HSPPR?Shelter medicine is unlike any other veterinary field.
