Counselor

At Horace Mann, we understand the importance of providing compassionate, timely support when individuals need it most. As a Counselor within an Employee Assistance Program, you will help members navigate behavioral health, substance use, relationship and work-life concerns through telephone, virtual and, when assigned, in-person support.

This position combines clinical assessment, brief solution-focused counseling, resource coordination and case management. You will also collaborate with service providers, Human Resources partners and client leaders to connect members with appropriate resources and support positive outcomes.

What You’ll Do

• Conduct telephonic triage and assessments, providing immediate support to members experiencing behavioral health, substance use, relationship or work-life concerns.
• Coordinate and manage cases from initial intake through completion, including necessary follow-up.
• Make sound clinical determinations in accordance with company risk policies and the best interests of the member.
• Connect members with appropriate network providers and other resources, including financial, legal, personal assistance and work-life services.
• Provide in-person and telehealth assessments, triage, coaching and brief solution-focused counseling as assigned.
• Collaborate with colleagues and after-hours service providers to support case completion and follow-up.
• Consult with service providers, coordinate referrals and complete session authorizations.
• Maintain timely, accurate and professional documentation within the case management system.
• Consult with Human Resources professionals and supervisory personnel from client organizations regarding employee-related concerns.
• Maintain current knowledge of industry practices, professional ethical standards and applicable licensure requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling or another behavioral health-related field.
• At least five years of experience as an EAP counselor or in an equivalent behavioral health clinical role.
• Strong assessment, triage, crisis-support, research, referral and case management capabilities.
• Knowledge of behavioral health conditions, levels of care and discharge-planning practices.
• Understanding of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and the appropriate handling of Protected Health Information (PHI).
• Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and other Windows-based programs and applications.
• Strong communication, clinical judgment, organization and documentation skills.

Preferred Credentials

• Licensed mental health clinician, Certified Employee Assistance Professional, certified Human Resources professional or another recognized industry credential in psychology, social work or counseling.
• An active, current and unrestricted professional license in the state of employment may be required for positions providing in-person counseling.

Pay Range: $66,500 - $92,000

Salary is commensurate to experience, location, etc.
