Performs specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping, and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical, and body fluid specimens. Prepares specimens for research requests and transports specimens to/from collection sites, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and regulatory guidelines. May perform special staining on tissues as needed, maintaining solutions and documenting quality control. Adheres to safety requirements and appropriately handles and disposes of chemicals. Follows safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste. Utilizes automated histology equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers’ instructions. Assists pathologists with frozen section preparations and procedural areas with specimen collection such as Fine Needle Aspirations. May prepare cytology specimens. Maintains technical skills and aptitudes related to specimen processing and staining performed in the department or work area assigned. In MSD: Performs Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing. In FL: If certified for QIHC, may perform IHC testing. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. Follows established procedures to collect and process biological specimens for analysis. Other duties as assigned. Clinical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR Successful completion of at least a 50-week official US military medical laboratory procedures training course and currently hold or have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Clinical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician); or qualified and served as high complexity testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024.
