Physician - Psychiatry (Section Chief)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility periods (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications United States Citizenship – Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from a VA‑approved school for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia. Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Recognized residencies include: Accredited core specialty training programs in the U.S. (ACGME or AOA). One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or first year of residency) followed by two years of independent practice. Non‑U.S. residency programs followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S., including related fellowships. Actively enrolled residents in accredited training programs are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers with an intermittent scope of practice. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements: Walking, sitting, talking, driving, telephone use; light lifting (under 15 lb); exposure to patients with psychiatric and physical illnesses, including violent or aggressive behavior. Provide psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population of veterans, including geriatric and post‑deployment patients with mental illness and psychosocial challenges such as homelessness and unemployment. Diagnose and manage psychiatric disorders through full therapeutic interventions, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, and overall patient care. Ensure practice complies with TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes, and mandatory continuing education. Offer psycho‑diagnostic services, assessing patients and utilizing appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques. Serve as a mental health team leader, coordinating consults, triage of specialty clinic referrals, and participating in treatment‑planning conferences with multidisciplinary team members. Order diagnostic tests and consultations; interpret results and make treatment decisions. Participate in supervision and teaching for the psychiatric residency program, perform on‑call duties, and undertake other related responsibilities as assigned. Carry out clinical duties in areas such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse, and other psychiatric disorders across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services settings.
